My grandmother's pharmacy has an option of giving medications in pre-sorted blister packs -- putting the morning/noon/night ones in separate compartments and including labels for everything. I don't know if other pharmacies do this, but it seems like a good option to ask about.

I have heard from apparently reliable sources that Meds not in containers carrying descriptions have been confiscated by border agents upon return to the US. Even if that risk is extremely slight, how much space would those containers take in your luggage? On a cruise, of course, you are not likely to bring meds ashore with you - unless it is something you take several time a day, so other countries' practices are likely to be a non-issue.
