Super Star Virgo

I've attached a photo taken at Singapore on Friday 16 September 2005, two days prior to our boarding of the ship for our second cruise on her. On this occasion we did two cruises back-to-back (with 2 days ashore in between because of the weekend gambling cruise).

The first of these was the Straits of Malacca cruise which was virtually the same as our first cruise on her in 2000. The second was the South China Sea cruise to Laem Chabang and Koh Samui.

Hi Guys,

Just back from Miami and our Western Caribbean cruise on the current largest cruiseship in the world ~ the Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Sea ~ and it was just awesome! Ice skating shows, surfing on deck, rock climbing and all! Now looking forward to cruise the E.Med.or Far East again.

Mike ~ I hope to send you an email after I gain my land legs, regarding the 'sudden change of mind and cancellations of SS.Libra Mea.cruises, by StarCruises:confused:' and hopefully you may give me some inside information. Looks like we may have to cruise with SSVirgo again when we return to the Far East in 2007 to visit relatives.

Keep this SSVirgo thread going folks!

Cheers. James:)

Welcome back James. Very glad that you enjoyed your cruise aboard Freedom of the Seas. I'll bet there was not enough time to do everything that the ship had to offer. Really big!

It is unfortunate that Star Cruises has indeed canceled The Med program for SuperStar Libra during 2007. But Virgo will welcome you back with open arms.

Now, work on those "land legs.;)

Regards,

Mike

Hi all,

This is first go at this so please excuse all my mistakes that I am sure to make. Am going on first ever cruise on 7th Jan 07 on Virgo and as you can imagine am getting rather excited that it is now only weeks away as was planned about 7 months ago. Am travelling with my partner (in our fifties)

and my 16 yr old son and his mate also 16. This ship was suggested by TA as one the boys would enjoy, do you think that will be the case. Am in Balcony cabin on deck 9 with boys in inside cabin directly opposite, this seems to be a good pick with others so hope this is alright. Any ideas on which shore excursions would be good, dont plan to do our own thing, first time overseas so we are really novices, will be fullfilling lifelong dream to ride an elephant somewhere for sure. I am sure I will have many more silly questions over the next few weeks so please bare with this very excited girl.

Hello to all

Hi Julie,

Sounds like you are really excited and looking forward to your trip. I bet your sun will love it. I am booked for the Virgo in May and coming along with my husband and I are my parents and my 17 year old brother who is very excited about the arcade and other activities aboard.

We cruised a few years ago on the Gemini which has pretty similar day tours as the Virgo and we were pretty happy to go on an organised tour each day. We loved Phuket and chose the tour with the elephant ride in it and had a great time. This time around we will probably do our own thing most places because with five people the tours can be expensive, but I definately understand why you would want to do the organised tours.

Hi Mike - Are there any 3 card Poker tables in the Casino of on the SSV? I learnt to play this on the RCI Freedom and found it a better game than the 5 card Poker. I won a bit of money too;) though stakes are a bit higher. On the last night of the cruise a friend from our group won over US$5,000 when he kept doubling the stakes:rolleyes:. Lucky chap.

Julie ~ as Nic posted, the Phuket's Elephant ride will be wonderful, but a bit expensive for a large group. Wonder if anyone tried doing this independently from the ship's excursion to get a group discount.

Enjoy whatever cruise you choose.

Cheers.......................James:)

Hi James,

Sorry, can't help with the 3 card poker, as I usually play blackjack or just use the slots. But I am sure that some of the other posters may have the answer to this.

If not, you can always contact Star at starcare@starcruises.com.my and they can give you any and all info.

Ciao,

Mike

Hi all

We were in a suite for a cruise in June and you are correct - this is Admiral Class, as for the Gala Dinner we chose the Italian restaurant (second sitting) and we did not sight the Captain at all. In fact the only crew who called in whilst we were dining was the Cruise Director. Not sure if the Captain dines at Bella Vista, Most men just wore Shirt and dress pants - not many at all in suits - in fact some joked that the only people wearing suits were 1st time cruisers - but dont let that put anyone off - it is a great night and the more dressed up you are - the better you feel. Just wish the budget would let us book for 07, oh well just have to hang out for 2008 :)

On all our SSV cruises, the captain always dined at Bella Vista on Gala Dinner night. On our last cruise in June most men at the cocktail party and later in Bella Vista wore suits or at least jackets and ties. This was for the second sitting of Gala Dinner, may have been different for first sitting (when the ship is quite full, they have two sittings for Gala Dinner). It depends on which captain is onboard, whether he will join first or second sitting. If you are in Admiral class, I would certainly suggest a jacket and tie, as you may get an invitation to the captain's table (or one of the other senior officers), unless you prefer to dine at one of the other restaurants on Gala Dinner night.

We have been lucky to sit at the captain's table twice and it was quite special. The chief engineer is usually also at that table. The hotel director has another table, so does the staff captain and possibly the staff chief engineer.

Hope you all enjoy your cruises on this wonderful ship.

Hi "SSV boardies"

Sorry - been offline of late due to numerous reasons.:o

Great to see it is still going strong !

Julie - you will love the cruise - what itinerary are you on ?

There are lots of options for everyone when it comes to activities and shorex, just utilise the "Star Navigator" which is left each evening so you can plan your time on board and work out your shorex from the starcruise website ( which lists them as options / itinerary whilst in the SSV part of their website ) - if anything is of interest or needs clarification there is usually someone from this board that can assist.

Great pics flyer682 - I still am unsure how to post mine ???

Thanks also to all for the Admiral - Captains Dinner - Bella Vista info.:D

My partners father is an old navy man who would get great joy from conversing with the men in charge. We are in Junior Suites again when cruising in Aug 07.

Happy cruisin

Simon :)

Dear All

Have confirmation of our next Virgo trip for June 2007 to Vietnam and Redang Island. Yippee!! :) I wont start counting sleeps just yet ...

Has anyone done this itinerary on Virgo before and if so do you have any suggestions for shore excursions in Vietnam??

Mike, thanks for the update on the Hong Kong itineraries - very much look forward to hearing more about those when available.

In the meantime, hope all is well with everyone.

Kind regards

Jane

Lucky you!

We did Vietnam and Kota Kinabalu in 2003 on Virgo. The trip up the river to Ho Chi Minh City is phantastic. We had an overnight in HCMC. The first day we joined a ship's excursion (city sightseeing tour) which I think was organised through the local tourist office (a lot of things are government run there). It was very good and gave a great overview of the city with quite a few stops, interesting commentary and lots of photo opportunities. The next morning we took the shuttle bus into the city and explored a little on our own. As it was the beginning of the SARS outbreak we did not go to the markets for example but walked around the city centre. It's a good idea to take some US Dollars in small notes, as that is widely accepted currency there. The Vietnam currency may be hard to come by. Lots of interesting souvenirs at very good prices!

We had Redang Island on our last cruise in June and just went swimming at a local resort there.

I'm sure you will have a great time. Lovely ship with a great crew.

Hi Murray Lee,

I had requested a specific cabin number when I booked and once that was confirmed my I knew. Just ask your travel agent, if it hasn't been assigned yet simply request that they follow up and get it for you.

Merry post-xmas everyone! it was a blast on the ship. BTW, for all regulars, COLIN IS BACK as Cruise Director!!! He will be based onboard SSVirgo from December to March 2007. One of the best, if not the best CD I've ever had.

Hi Ina and Bob,

Yes, Eddie is still aboard Virgo. He has not signed-off for holiday yet. He is a fabulous man, and a real pro at being Hotel Manager.I'll try and find out it he will be aboard during your cruise. Did you know that Eddie's brother Vinter was also a Hotel Manager with Star?

Thank you both for the really fantastic invitation. It is so welcomed and appreciated. It would be my pleasure to meet both of you also, but alas, I will not be aboard at that time. I must be in Thailand again, to take care of business. Perhaps the wheels of good fortune may turn our way in the future, and we can meet. Hope so. Thanks again.

Best regards,

Mike

Hi Tracey,

Just heard from my contact at Star Cruises and she stands corrected on the month. Indeed Virgo will be calling at Laem Chabang in April and Gemini in May. It was a typing mistake while reading the schedules.

There are no changes/alterations to any itineraries.

Regards,

Mike
