What was your first Carnival ship?

The Carnivale back in 1978

My how things have changed.

This thread has got me reminiscing. The itinerary was to be San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Unfortunately seas were too high to dock at St. Maarten (which was to be the highlight of the trip because of the beaches) so we ended up in Nassau in lieu. Hated Nassau as a cruise ship stop but one year later moved there and spent 9 of the most memorable years living there.

You learn so much by traveling.

Mine was the TSS Festivale when my mom and dad took us on our first cruise when I was in college (seems as long ago as it was). It was an older ship even then but I thought it had style and we had a blast. We went on two New Years cruises each year thereafter on the Holiday and then the Jubilee.

Now, nearly 30 years later, I had the chance to take my parents on a cruise and did so about 16 months ago. My mother ultimately couldn't make it due to health issues so my dad went alone with my wife and me. He had his own cabin and was thrilled to have his own space for a change! He was getting weak in declining health and didn't have much stamina but he quickly found his way to his two favorite spots on the Fantasy; the casino and the soft serve ice cream machine on the lido deck. He never left the ship but enjoyed himself so much. I would go get him things he didn't have the energy to get even though I knew he would enjoy them (a just-grilled corned beef and swiss on rye from the deli for example). I can still hear the Filipino manager in the casino standing behind him at a slot machine saying "you winning Mr. Lloyd" (I like that they call you Mr. "first name", I'm "Mr. Matt"). My died passed away three months later and I cannot adequate express how glad I am that trip took place.

I have been lucky enough to go on many wonderful trips, nearly all more costly than the 5 night cruise out of my hometown, but that cruise will always mean so much to me. Lesson? If you are debating taking an aging parent on a cruise, do it. There might not be another opportunity.
