elcydcruiser Posted March 27, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2014 Has anyone gotten a new US Passport that included an ID type card to use in lieu of your Passport to travel to Canada or Mexico? We're getting ready for a Princess Pacific Coastal...and one of our group wants to carry the ID card instead of the Passport. Can she use the ID card for check-in process (Port of LA) ? If you are asking about the PASSPORT CARD, the girls I travel with only carry that, and not the full passport when we go to Mexico, and it's perfect for what is needed for CBP. BUT.. if something happens to her, and you are further from the US than, well, Ensenada, I would have her take her full passport BOOK in case something happens and she needs to fly home for any reason, just because it will be easier, and less time consuming. If she would need to fly home, she can't use the card, and would have to wait to get clearance from the embassy before she could get on a flight home.. Lerin Posted March 27, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2014 Is it really that hard to take her passport? What's the point of having one if you're not going to use it?
klfrodo Posted March 27, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 27, 2014 She can check in with passport card, enhanced DL, Global Entry card, etc. However, if she is flying back home after the cruise, the passport book is required. The above mentioned ID cards are only good for cruises or land border crossings.
elcydcruiser Posted March 27, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted March 27, 2014 Thank you for your replies. I see your point Lerin, but I also see the convenience of the card. I will pass along the information.
dwjoe Posted March 27, 2014 #6 Share Posted March 27, 2014 I have the passport card and the passport book, and I bring both. I leave the book in the cabin safe and take the card ashore, though opinions vary on which to take ashore.
