Early May in Alaska: Juneau & Skagway

Two of us will be on the 5/7 HAL cruise.

 

We want to do whale watching (Juneau) and white pass (skagway), but afraid early May weather will not be too nice to see much.

 

I also read a message that early May is probably too early for the whales to be back in the Alaskan waters. is it true?

 

As Early May doesn't seem to be too busy yet, does anyone know rather we can easily book tour (base on weather) when we get to shores ?

May is the 'dry month', IMO the best time to see Alaska. We went whale watching once in May, (Juneau), and saw several.

Not all the humpbacks are migrated, but you will see some on whale watches. There are some who do not migrate as well.

 

White Pass is actually spectacular in mid May with snow at the summit. Lake Bennett isn't going to be a tour option, and if going to Emerald Lake, it likely will be frozen.

 

I never recommend booking tours at the dock. It is always superior and time saving to have them booked in advance. You should take a look at conditions a week before and decide then.

 

If you wait until you get there, some tours will not be available. Depends what you are looking at?
