happy 2 b cruising Posted April 3, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2014 We are staying at the Santa Chiara Hotel located in the Piazzale Roma area. Would appreciate knowing the costs of a land taxi to the Piazzale Roma area from the airport, from the Piazzale Roma to the Celebrity ship docks and finally from the docks to the airport. We are luggage heavy. Will the taxi's charge a flat fee or charge by how much luggage you have? Really appreciate your replies so I know how may Euros to purchase, thank - you. Will&Hel Posted April 6, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 6, 2014 The ATVO express bus to piazza Roma is fast and just as easy as a taxi even with luggage costs about 7 euro the driver loaded and unloaded the luggage we then used the people mover at 1 euro to the port This web site has lots of useful info http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice-cruises.htm Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Rare Hlitner Posted April 6, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2014 This is Italy where nothing is ever as it is :). But a land taxi from Marco Polo airport to your hotel will be about 45 Euros (plus or minus 5). From your hotel to the port a taxi will be very negotiable (since it is such a short haul) but they will ask for 20 Euros (you should try to get them down to 10). From the port to the airport will be 40-45 Euros. Now, you have seen the reference to the ATVO bus and we recommend this as an excellent option. It is a lot cheaper then a taxi, the buses are very comfortable, and they easily handle all your luggage (they store it under the bus). The ATVO bus ends right at the Piazale Roma only a short walk from your hotel. Hank
agabbymama Posted April 7, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) As Hank states, the ATVO bus is very comfortable and affordable. Just be prepared to load your own luggage under the bus, and then retrieve it yourself. The morning we took it to the airport, it was raining and the bus driver opened the under carriage compartment and returned to his seat, telling everyone to just load their own luggage under the bus. Then he waited inside by the door to collect the tickets. This was in 2008, so things could have changed by now. But along these same lines one would note that the bus loading area at the airport is covered. Hank

Very hard to pack light when my DH is a big guy, with big clothes:D and he also travels with a CPAP machine. Trying to avoid any excess lifting or pulling of our luggage in regards to transportation. AF-1 Posted April 13, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) Depending on how much luggage you have your hotel is close to the people mover. It's a tram system that goes from piazza Roma to cruise port. 2 euros Edited April 13, 2014 by AF-
Rare Hlitner Posted April 13, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Depending on how much luggage you have your hotel is close to the people mover. It's a tram system that goes from piazza Roma to cruise port. 2 euros We love the People Mover and often use it ourselves. But when one has luggage they have to be careful because not only do you have to walk across the P. Roma to get to the station, but once you arrive at the port station there is quite a long hike to the cruise ship terminal. We have done this with luggage, but DW and I are in pretty good shape and were able to handle moving our luggage several hundred yards. I always value other peoples prior experiences with traveling with lots of luggage. This is the 1st time luggage is a issue for us while traveling in Europe. After reading prior threads I even selected a hotel that had land taxi accessibility for that reason.
Rare Hlitner Posted April 13, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 13, 2014 :) You are the best! I always value other peoples prior experiences with traveling with lots of luggage. This is the 1st time luggage is a issue for us while traveling in Europe. After reading prior threads I even selected a hotel that had land taxi accessibility for that reason. Thanks for the kind words. The irony is that we are currently planning our own 2 month trip which will include a month running all over France with 2 large pieces of luggage plus 2 heavy carry-ons. The luggage issue is one of those planning factors too often overlooked until its too late. In our situation we are renting a larger car (for a month) so we have a large enough trunk to hold all of our luggage (you do not want any exposed luggage while driving in Europe). We also have to take the train from Le Havre to Paris (with all our luggage) and I just laid out my old luggage cable lock (haven't used this in years) to bring along. This is a small device that dispenses a steel cable (up to about 3 feet long) that can be threaded through several pieces of luggage and then locked securely (the device has its own combination lock). It is similar to a bicycle cable lock but is lighter weight, When on trains we sometimes have to leave our luggage at the end of a car, and with this device we can securely lock the luggage together and often to something solid on the train. It is not perfect, but does add a little more security to the situation. One can never over think the luggage issue. Hank

Like you we are staying in hotel close to taxi's. Although the people mover would be cheaper we are traveling with a lot of luggage, so want to be dropped off right at our ship
