Louanne thank you so much for your positive comments. My husband and I, both veterans (me only three years and he 35 years served in Air Force) will be on the Grand on the 28th and we cannot wait. I have read so much on this ship, both negative and positive, and yet we are still going!!! Hmm I think. Rust on a boat? You mean the thing that is traveling on water has rust? Wow what a concept. But I am like you. I look at the half full glass and only see the good in all. Will there be some things I don't like? Perhaps. Will I let it ruin my 30th Anniversary cruise? NO WAY. I will accept the good with the bad and wake up the next morning and start fresh. I think we will be on the young side (54 and 57) but does this matter? No it does not. I enjoy all people whenever we go. Must be the fact I have moved 23 times in the past 30 years and in my life time, moved over 30 TIMES. I will have fun no matter what life brings me on board (hmmm not if my room smells of smoke but there are remedies for that too!!!) and I am counting the days and hours before we board the ship for Hawaii.

Do you remember which nights are formal nights? Need to plan on when to celebrate our anniversary and my husbands retirement. Again, thank you for your words.

Congratulations on both milestones! It sounds like you and your husband will have a *perfect* cruise. Enjoy.

Sorry, can't help with the formal nights on the Grand Hawaii itinerary (we went on the Star). I think that you can make it whenever (early on in the cruise is best) on the cruise personalizer. When you are on board the day that you picked they will give you a card saying to present in the dining room for a cake. You can take that down anytime. Hope this makes sense.

We just did the California Coast cruise and felt the ship was in great shape. There was some tile issues around the pool and some wear and tear, but that is normal for a boat as old as this one. We did fell the Dinning room service was hit and miss. One night it took almost 2 hrs for dinner at a table of 8. The rest of the nights were at table for 2 and went much quicker and the service was better. Also, the bar service around the pool was lacking. This is our 7th cruise and the first time there was never anyone asking if you wanted something from the bar. Of the 3 different days we sat out by the pool, we were asked only once. Not a big thing, just nice to have them bring you drinks than having to get them yourself.

All in all though, it was a great cruise and a great boat.

Sadly, I think this is what we will come to expect and accept as 'normal' in the future cruise world...armed escorts. I have had them in San Diego and most recently in New York last fall.

Security is only going to get tighter and really, the cruising world is no where as strict (IMHO) as air travel...so far.

Even though you will be on the young side (we were too!), you will very much enjoy talking to the other vets onboard. We met so many people. We were on our 20th Anniversary. You will have a blast :) I don't know what days are formal on the Hawaii trip. We were on the California Coastal. They alternate routes. I would love to know how your trip goes. Please come back and let me know!:)

I really enjoyed the coastal cruise and we had lovely weather. Customs and immigration took place on board when we were in Long Beach. Documents and and a note telling you what time to report were delivered to our stateroom. The process went smoothly. Have a great cruise.

I was on Golden Princess on a California Coastal reposition to Vancouver a number of years ago. We stopped in San Francisco for the day and a couple of crew members never came back. By the time Customs, local law authorities and Princess got finished with the matter, we sailed six hours late..

I was on that same cruise, bdjam! Had a great time.

How was the Coastal Cruise? Did you have to disembark for customs since we are coming back from Ensenada? I have heard that it can be a long and boring business.

Only 8 days till we board the Grand for Hawaii.

We had an AMAZING time. The weather was great! The ship and crew were fabulous! You will have a great time!
