Currency in the Baltics

Will be on the July 3 cruise on the Norewgian Star.Wondering if euros and credit cards can be used In all the ports of call except St Petersburg.

Tallinn,Stockholm,Helsinki,and Berlin are the other ports.Just would like to know.

Yes, you can use credit cards everywhere, but it is not advisable to use them in Russia due to security problems in their system. In most countries you can use euros even if it is not their currency. But you may run into vendors who will not accept other currency.

 

The street vendors in Russia will accept euros and USD. The only place we found that were refused euros was Denmark.

 

As previous poster said there are numerous posts with the specifics on the Baltics board. Best idea is to get a credit card for cash withdrawal at ATMs in each port. The money dispensed will be in local currency and you can get only the amount needed for the day.

You can use Euros in Tallinn, Helsinki and Berlin. As you are visiting Stockholm last you can change some spare Euros to Swedish Kronor when you are in Helsinki. Personally I always use the litte Tavex exchange office 50 feet into Fabian street from corner Fabian Street/Northern Esplanade, just two blocks from the Market Square in downtown. Decent rates and no extra commission.

It is a good idea to have some local currency when you are touring in that country. If you cannot get it before you leave, then try an ATM when you arrive. Sweden and Denmark use their own different currencies and would benefit you to try and have some of the local currency. You never know who will, and will not, take Euro's or a CC, especially smaller establishments and vendors.

We took small amounts of the correct currency for each country and then withdrew more from ATMs as needed.
