Barwick Cruiser Posted May 8, 2014 Author #26 Share Posted May 8, 2014 Wells Fargo ONLY charges a flat $5 fee for ATM withdrawals. Wells Fargo ONLY charges 3% when using your debit card to purchase a product. Wells Fargo charges ONLY a 3% fee if you walk into a foreign bank and use a teller to withdraw cash. Wells Fargo DOES NOT charge both the $5 and the 3% fee for simply using the ATM to get cash, I really hate how Wells Fargo wrote the sentence above. They took two totally different transactions and combined them into one sentence that does nothing but cause confusion. There should be 3 separate sentences for 3 separate types of transactions like this: Wells Fargo will assess a $5 fee for ATM cash withdrawals made outside the United States. Wells Fargo will assess an International Purchase Transaction fee which is 3% of the transaction amount for each purchase made with your debit card in a foreign currency that has been converted into a U.S. dollar amount by a network." Wells Fargo charges a fee of 3% of the transaction amount for over-the-counter cash disbursements. I agree that the fine print of the fees and charges can be confusing and/or misleading. I am hoping that the details for my bank are similar and have sent an inquiry to my bank (which is online only...no actual physical building) looking for further details for my situation. Once I hear back and know exactly what I'm dealing with I'll be able to make a better decision. Thanks for the help and clarifications.
iancal Posted May 11, 2014 #27 Share Posted May 11, 2014 We never have a problem getting money from bank ATM's on Sundays. We typically buy 500E prior to leaving Canada (on land trips). We NEVER buy currency from the bank. Exchange rates are too high plus they often do not have a good selection of bills. Check to see if there is a foreign exchange store near you. Their rates, where we live in Calgary, are much better than the bank rate. In fact, employees from our bank across the street get their exchanges at the store rather than at the bank. And forget the auto club. They use bank rates.
