rikig1969 Posted May 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2014 Hi! My partner and I will be doing the Oosterdam for the overnight Seattle to Vancouver cruise May 10. This will be our first time on Holland America, and thought this would be a good way to try it out. From what I can see, this is a great ship. On the overnight cruise, does the casino open? holacanada Posted May 7, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2014 Hi rikig ! I would be surprised because when in overnight, we are in a port city. The casino closes when the boat is moored. Especially when we are in Canadian territory. Have a nice cruise ! Holacanada from Quebec City
Ms. Alpha Posted May 7, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 7, 2014  I understood the OP to be talking about a 1 day cruise from Seattle to Vancouver. I would expect the casino to open after sailaway. The responder was talking about a cruise where you stay in port overnight. I did that last year, but can't remember whether shops and casino were closed or not. On an overnight cruise where they can get into international waters (12 miles out) they would open the casino, but I don't think they can between Vancouver and Seattle. I only know of a couple of places in the world where the casino can stay open in port. Hamilton Bermuda will be one soon (if not already) thanks to a new law. funugy Posted May 7, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 7, 2014 They can and will if they want to make casino $$ for the line. We have done quite a few of these and 2-3 nighters also. Last year on NCL from Vanc to Nanaimo to Victoria to Seattle they just turned circles for hours in intl. waters to keep it open every night. But if a ship just goes south from Vancouver to Seattle it is never in international waters, is it? Is there someplace in there that is 12 miles from both countries? Or were you turning circles in Canadian waters and they allow the casino to be open? Edited May 7, 2014 by catl331
funugy Posted May 7, 2014 #7 Share Posted May 7, 2014 We must have been in intl waters as none of the distances traveled on those nights were very far between
jtl513 Posted May 7, 2014 #8 Share Posted May 7, 2014 We must have been in intl waters as none of the distances traveled on those nights were very far betweenTerritorial waters extend 12 nautical miles from shore. The Straight of Georgia in the Vancouver vicinity is only about 16 NM wide, and it gets narrower as you go south. You could never have been more than about 8 NM from shore, and were never in international waters. It must be that Canada allows ships to have the casino open within their territorial waters. Krazy Kruizers Posted May 8, 2014 #9 Share Posted May 8, 2014 I checked our daily program for our 2012 cruise -- 14 days on the Amsterdam. We were in Vancouver the day before our cruise ended in Seattle. The program noted that the Casino would not be open the day we were in Vancouver or while we transited to Seattle.
