Has anyone done this excursion and what was your experience? We are hoping to do an early afternoon excursion prior to whale watching and this is our only option. Otherwise we would probably choose Harv & Marv.

Yes, this was the first whale watch I did 10 years ago when we sailed on the Amsterdam. We had a wonderful time. There was a naturalist on board and a microphone to hear the whales. They provided binoculars, and we had whales swim right under the boat. We also had a very nice buffet dinner included. Perhaps because the excursion took place around dinner time, we had only 1/3 to 1/2 the boat filled so no problems at all seeing everything.

I've also gone out with Harv and Marv, but I was more comfortable on the larger boat. YMMV.

We did this evening whale watch excursion with Allen Marine, booked through the cruise line in 2008. I don't believe the boat was totally full, but the catamaran was large and comfortable with plenty of room for everyone. We never felt crowded. Our narrator/tour guide was an Alaskan college student and she answered all questions and was quite informed. We were served a huge buffet dinner which included roast beef, shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, sandwiches, trays of meat and cheese, crudité with dips, fresh rolls, trays of fresh sliced fruit, salad, potato salad etc. The food was good. There was also a bar where you could purchase soft drinks and alcohol beverages. I think bottled water and lemonade or punch were included. One of our very best excursions. Would do it again.

Also, I would like to add that the Allen family is from Sitka and they've been building custom catamarans and boats for years specifically for these type of Alaskan tours. In fact, the U.S. government was so impressed with them, they were contracted to build some vessels for the U.S. Navy. Allen Marine tours are first class all the way.
