stockholm hop on hop off bus

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We arriving 13 June on the NCL Star at Stadsgarden pier. I want to go to Gamla Stan and Vasa Museum. I am wondering if perhaps buying the cruise ship's green hop on hop off bus might be a good option. It makes both of those stops and more. DH can walk, but trying not to waste steps.

Any experience with this? It's $39 each, really not that concerned with the cost as much as with ease of use and less walking.

Thanks!

Well, even with a HoHo bus there would probably be some walking, especially in Gamla Stan which have to be experienced from "within it" where it is way too tight for a bus.

Imo with some planning, you could get a much better experience from Stockholm then if you would go on a standard HoHo bus tour.

From Stadgårdskajen the most convenient is to use the HoHo boats that goes directly from the pier to Vasa.

Then from Vasa you could use the same HoHo boat service that you arrived on to the Royal Palace or Old Town.

The boat departs every 15 min from Vasa. The journey will take 35min to southern end of Old Town and another 10 min to the Royal palace.

There are other HoHo boat services as well but they depart from Allmänna Gränd and not Vasa. http://kartor.eniro.se/m/CbHVz

If you prefer bus, the bus stop for the bus to Royal Palace/Old Town is only 400m away; http://kartor.eniro.se/m/dwU0L

From the Old Town you can use the HoHo boats mentioned above or public bus;

Based on recommendations here and Rick Steve's book, I was all set t take this HoHo boats but discovered that frequency is not that great and they only go in clockwise direction.

That is, you have to stay on board for all stops before reaching Vasa museum and if you want Gamla Stan as "rest of the day" stop, have to make sure that you take boat such that it reaches your ship in time after visiting all other stops in clockwise fashion.

I understand that OP wants to minimize walking. So this may not be helpful for them but for me, SEK 115 day card was extremely useful

Could take any bus (and even city boat) at whim and even go on self guided tour of other parts of the city (such as taking bus 65 to see famous crown on the bridge)

Another easy option is to visit Slussen tower (above McDonald) which has a quirky elevator (and is free) for some excellent vistas of STK harbor.

Since we arrived at Frihammen on a Sunday there was no public transportation, so opted for the HoHo buses. Cost wise was exactly the same, about $40PP. We thought that pretty expensive, but we had no choice. They are easy to use and just don't drop you off at Vasa's front door, you have to walk a bit.

Cheers
