The pier where the ships dock is in Costa Maya. Mahahual is a short distance away. I hope this helps!

Pictures tell the story better:

The cruise dock in Costa Maya:

Looking past a docked HAL ship at Mahahual:

View of the ships from the "beach" at Costa Maya:

So, Costa Maya is not the same as Mahahual. The dock is at the cruiseline build port where the "tourist" facilities are located. There is a large saltwater pool with a swim up bar, restaurant, and all the usual "duty free" shopping located there.

My advice is to take a taxi, found out the back of the building, to Mahahual and enjoy the beach. There you will find a sandy beach with many areas of chairs, banana boat rides, jet skis, snorkel/dive trips, horse or quads to rent and plenty of restaurants and bars with prices lower than at the Costa Maya area.
How far from the cruise ship pier to Majahual?
I'd say about 2 miles. You could walk if you are in good shape and don't mind the heat. Taxi there is $3 and return to the port is $2 per person.
