Best way from Whittier to ANC,Denali, Fairbanks

We are arriving Whittier on the Island Princess next month. We are planning on driving from Anchorage to Denali to Fairbanks to catch our flight home. We are wondering do we rent an Avis car in Whittier and drive the whole way, take the bus or train to Anchorage to get a car. It seems that the bus or train from Whittier to Anchorage would be about $220 for the four of us. Avis has a reasonable drop charge on a four door Impala but anything bigger is around $1,000 from Whittier.

 

Any ideas?

An Impala might be a little snug with 4 people and their luggage, but you'll only be sitting in the car for 1 1/2 hr.
