Is there a "taxi stand" in Taormina?

We plan to take taxi from Giardini Naxos to Taormina and spend a few hours there. Is there a place in Taormina where taxis drop off people so we can get a ride back? Or, do we have to make arrangement beforehand for a taxi to pick us up at a certain time?

The taxi from Giardini Naxos will probably leave you at either the Catania Gate or Messina Gate. You can asked to be picked up at a certain time and place or get a taxi in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele which is a few yards up from Messina Gate.

Yes, there is an area where cars cannot go any further where they will drop you off and plenty of taxis there for the return. It is at the entrance of the pedestrian area.

I read that stores close for long siesta at 1pm, which would be a good time to visit Teatro Greco Romano, than we can go back to port on our own time afterwards, instead of waiting for a pre-arranged taxi.

Not all the stores close for siesta, the restaurants and cafes are still open. Afternoon is more likely a better time to visit the theater as most of the tour groups are there in the morning. However, if you are there in the summer, along with other cruise ship groups, the town will be busy all day. You will still be able to get a taxi when you need it.

Actually the best time to visit is early in the morning before the town gets to crowded.
