Alaska sailing-formal night-specialty dining

We went to the steakhouse on the Coral on a formal night and wore what we normally wore in the dining room. Black pants and a nice top for me and my husband wore black jeans and a button up shirt. We saw a few people in formal clothes. You definitely don't need to dress formal.

Smart casual is what most people wear at specialty dining rooms on all nights including on formal nights.
I've found that on formal nights in particular, people dress up nicer for the Specialty restaurants than Smart Casual. Perhaps it's because many are celebrating a special occasion but I've felt underdressed several times with very nice Smart casual clothing.

Thanks for the info all. I should also mention this is on an Alaska sailing. Our experience with Ak formal nights were they seemed to be slightly less formal then say while in Carib, TA, Europe, etc. Just wanted some insight. Thanks.
