CruizinTigers Posted June 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2014 I just found this article today about this mosquito born illness. I am now officially worried about our cruise in 30 days since 3 of the 4 ports of call on our trip are listed on the Center for Disease Control's website as having official reports of the disease. What are others hearing about this. I see nothing on the RCI website about this. Is anyone else worried? http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/chikungunya-cases-double-caribbean-n123606 http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/watch/chikungunya-saint-martin
cb at sea Posted June 6, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Bring a repellant with DEET....mosquitos are active during dawn and dusk....not usually in the middle of the day, when you'll be out and about. I wouldn't worry too much.
edjny Posted June 6, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Probably not a problem if you are staying in town at ports. But, if you are taking excursions into the rain forrest or jungles, be sure to cover up with deet repellant.

Just Kidding. :D As was stated previously, Mosquitos are typically active at Dawn and Dusk which isn't really an issue during our cruise. I think this would be more of a concern if you were staying in the islands and were out and about in the evenings when they are most active. Try not to let it stress you outl if you think you'll be out during these peak times, or on an excursion that takes you into forested ares where they are more likely to be active, bring some insect repellent with you. CVU Posted June 6, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) We were on IOS in Jan.& FEb = over a month and only put repellant on in St. Maartin. That was the only port with this mosquito alert. We were only in town and on the beach in the mid day hours. Never saw a mosquito and they love me!:D The other ports on the 6 and 8 nt itinerary we did not hear or see a mosquito but we were not in the woody areas. Same for me, was there this March and mosqies love me too, but I even forget to put repellant on (I had it in my room) and I was also in the French part of St.Maarten and never saw one of the little buggers. The dangerours time for Mosqies is always around dusk.
CruizinTigers Posted June 6, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Thanks all for sharing these comments. They are putting me at ease, a little! Will just have to remember to cover ourselves in repellent I suppose. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
