Is it still safe and easy....

Yes, it is still safe to go out alone in Aruba. Just don't leave any valuables in your rental car. Rental cars get broken into. They are easy targets because of their license plates. We spend several weeks in Aruba every year and go wherever we want during the day, and always feel very safe. Just use the same precautions that you would use at home. The San Nicolas area is a little sketchy, with prostitutes all around. Some people feel a little uncomfortable walking around that area. We don't go over there, but some people do.

We are looking to rent a jeep in Aruba and tour on our own. We are just curious if it is best to reserve a jeep when we get there or to do it online. Also if anyone has personally used a rental company and could let us know how that was would be great as well. Thanks!!!

Aruba is not like many tender only ports where docking/anchoring is dependent upon weather. Cruise ships rarely miss calling in Aruba.

Why would you take a chance of being shut out by NOT reserving in advance?

Aruba is an island with a finite, limited number of rental vehicles available for hire.

Low season or not, we have have been on the island in June, low season, and not been able to find a car available last minute.

We have also reserved cars in June, in advance, only to show up and be told there are none available. No thanks to Hertz. ;)

If you want to rent a car while in Aruba, reserve it in advance.

Thanks for the info :) We are going to go ahead and rent a car for $40. Sounds like this is a great plan for safety reasons and a great way to see the islands. Other than the light house, what do you suggest as a must-see? Thanks!

Will take your advice and rent in advance! will the car rental company give us a map of the island with highlighted attractions or do i need to take something?

Any reputable car rental agency should give you a map. ;)

Maps may also be available inside the cruise terminal.

If worst comes to worst, there is one road running from north to south along the coast on the leeward side of the island.

To get to the entrance to Arikok National Park see here. There is an entrance fee to the park.

We had a great time Aruba this past week renting a car. We rented from smart rent a car and everything went off without a hitch! $42 to rent an economy car and $10 to refill it with gas. It was perfect we also printed off google maps to visit all the spots we wanted to see including: arashi beach, lighthouse, alto vista chapel, some old ruins, a random beautiful spot we found, and Charlie's bar. It was the perfect day we didn't have a local telling us about everything but we def saw the island and were able to stay at places as long as we wanted. I would definitely recommend doing this!
