Tie me kangaroo down sport(s jacket)

Hi all,

First off, apologies for the thread title.

A question about the Smart (not formal or smart casual) dress code. We have 4 such nights coming up.

The P&O site states:

"Men: a smart shirt and trousers with a jacket, such as a blazer or sports jacket. Or a suit and tie if you fancy it"

My point is that a tie is not mentioned as a necessity if you go for the shirt/trousers,/jacket option. I've plenty of nice shirts and given a choice prefer not to wear a tie. Is this permitted/frowned upon? At a push I could go down the tie route the first smart evening to give me an indicator for the other 3, but forwarned is forearmed.

Thanks

Martin

A tie isn't required. I didn't even take one with me on my cruise, let alone wear one. It's too old fashioned now, I don't even wear one to work now and haven't for a few years. I still have loads though gathering dust in the wardrobe, only wear them for weddings, christenings and funerals nowadays.

To me, as long as its a smart shirt with only one button undine at the top, then that looks pretty smart to me. Just don't show your medallion off though :-P

If you want to wear a suit there is no need for a tie. The definition of 'jacket' is pretty vague as well.

from the oxford english dictionery

An outer garment extending either to the waist or the hips, typically having sleeves and a fastening down the front:

That leaves plenty of scope for all sorts of 'jackets' ;)

ps - my jacket is a nice crumply linen one without gravy stains

pps - next year they are dropping the jacket requirement on 4 of the ships.

Thanks guys,

I'd need the (fake) tan for the medallion...and the chest...

Hmmm....could use ties as gravy deflectors if it looks like I'm going to I run out of shirts and have to recycle a couple...
