Cruise Ship's Length of Stay in Ports

My DW's brother and SIL are currently on a CCL cruise and shared their itinerary with us. They have several ports of call in which their ship doesn't depart until late evening. They were in San Juan yesterday and their ship wasn't scheduled to leave until 11 pm. On all of our Caribbean itineraries with NCL the latest we've ever stayed someplace is 6 pm.

Why does CCL stay later in ports than NCL? Which is more typical in the cruise industry - staying later like CCL or the late afternoon departure times for NCL?

They got into San Juan at 7 am and were scheduled to leave at 10 pm. They did have a lot of passengers leaving he ship and new passengers coming on, so maybe that's the reason.

No biggie as I always assumed the cruise lines came to and left their ports of call pretty much the same.
