Breakaway - question for smokers

Hi - me and my mother are new to Norwegian. We are going on the Breakaway on Oct. 5th and are so excited that it is a girls only cruise. This will be her 7th cruise and my 3rd (I have only been on Carnival). I have a few questions about smoking on board - I know you can smoke in the casino and on deck 15 at the poolside bar - is there anywhere else? We like to sit on deck at a table and relax and have a smoke or two - can we do that??

 

I have received this cruise through The Rivers Casino and we are only doing the Inside Room since we have a family cruise planned for May, 2015 so we cannot upgrade to a balcony.

 

Also, has anyone purchased cartons of cigarettes on board, if so how much are they?

 

I have enjoyed these threads so much and am constantly on here reading reviews and tips. Thanks to everyone for all the great info.

 

One more question, we will be taking the train into Penn Station and will get there at 10:55 - we plan on going directly to the port - will that time be ok?? I thought I read somewhere that the ones with the free cruise board after Handicap and VIP's - is that correct? Will it matter that we won't be there till 11:30 or so??

My wife and I were on the Breakaway in October of 2013. She is a smoker. We did have a balcony room so while in the room, she would peek around to make sure none of our neighbors were out and would light up.

 

We found that on Deck 8, near the cigar bar, around the Maltings Bar outside area ( starboard side) there are comfortable chairs and tables that have ash trays on them. This was one of my wife's go to spots to sit and relax and have a cigarette.

 

We also found some out of the way outdoor locations where a quick cigarette did not bother anyone.

 

And as you mentioned you can smoke in the casino.

 

I cannot answer your question about priority boarding. We arrived at the port around 11:30 and from the time we arrived until they called our boarding group it was about 50 minutes or so. To us that was no big deal.

 

cartons of cigarettes are better than 50% less than you would pay on land ( especially in New York ). I think they limit you to two cartons per person although I am not positive on that. They have all the brand name cigarettes available.

They were advertising 3 cartons for $86 when we were on the Pearl last month.

On the Dawn this past May, they had Marlboros at 5 cartons for $180 - $36 per carton. They are $60+ in NH and $100 in MA. I bought the 5 cartons for a co-worker. My husband smokes Salem, and I got him a carton for $45 plus a carton of Pall Mall for $29.

 

The rule is you can purchase 1 carton of smokes and 1 liter of alcohol tax and duty free. The store people said that I could be charged the tax/duty on extra purchases. He stated it would be $1 per item.

 

So here I come off the Dawn in Boston with 7 cartons and 4 bottles expecting to declare it. I handed over my declaration and they didn't even look at my passport or declaration form - just wished me a good day!

Every night, I enjoyed my pre-dinner cocktails and a few smokes at one of the high-top tables outside of Maltings. Outside at Shakers Bar there is a smoking area with small couches and tables if you prefer that type of seating.

I allow myself to smoke once a year, while on vacation. I don't know exactly hIow I do it -- or, more importantly, how I quit afterwards -- but I've been doing this since I "quit" about 8 years ago.

 

Anyway, I bought a carton from the duty free shop and I believe it was around $40. In New York City, thanks to the various sin taxes, that won't even get you four packs!

 

Although I had an aft-facing balcony, I didn't smoke on it, largely because I'm INCREDIBLY sensitive to non-smokers. 51 weeks a year, I don't want smoke in my presence, so I keep that in mind during my "smoking" week.

 

I found plenty of places to smoke, including several places along the water front. I loved getting a cocktail at night, picking a spot along there where smoking was allowed, and just settling in for a lovely evening with myself. :)

Hi, I'm from Pittsburgh and also have a free cruise from Rivers. We're considering doing the 11/9 sailing. If you don't mind me asking, how much was it total with the port fees & taxes? I think I'm eligible for an OV but just trying to get an idea of total cost of this "free" cruise.

 

Also, are you taking the Amtrak into NYC? I checked my dates but don't see anything that gets me there that early. I'm just trying to check out whatever transportation options I have. I certainly don't want to pay the NYC parking fee.

Hi PA2CRUISE -- The total for 2 of us was around $640 for an inside room. It was $80 each to upgrade to an oceanview and $300 per person for an balcony but we just decided to stick with the inside room.

 

We are taking the train out of Lancaster - they have a train at 7:55am that gets us to Penn Station at 10:49am. We have also looked into the Megabus from Pittsburgh - they have one that leaves around 10:30pm the night before the cruise and gets you into NYC around 7:30am. I heard it is really reasonable.

I wish everyone was as considerate as you. I am a non-smoker and have asthma that is easily triggered by smoke. I am on the Breakaway right now. Unfortunately, our room is above the cigar bar area. Either smoke is drifting up from there or one of our balcony neighbors is breaking ship rules and smoking. Whichever, I am not a happy camper. Too many smokers focus on their right to smoke and don't consider that it is a real health issue for some people to be exposed to second hand smoke. I love NCL cruise lines, but this may be the end of cruising on any ship with cigar bars for me. Way too many smokers on this ship! I have passed smoking areas several times already, nearly causing an asthma attack, and I cannot even enjoy the casino, which I would like to. No fun...no fair :(

Everyone else has covered the smoking info, but regarding your arrival time, you should be fine. They are not strict with when people arrive, you just go when you want and get put in a numbered group for boarding. You should be ok. I'm sure you'll find the waterfront has some nice areas to have a smoke. I'm not a smoker, but I do think this ship has lots more places for smokers to light up and not feel so confined. The waterfront is a really nice feature for everyone. Have a great cruise!

Why did you book a cabin near a cigar lounge:eek: What other smoking areas do you seem to find and choose to be near?
