Can You Get Things Cooked the Way You Want Them?

On my RCCL and Celebrity, I couldn't get my eggs poached easy for Eggs Benedict or a Medium Rare Hamburger. The burger was like shoe leather. And I was told that was the way they had to serve them.

Will HAL let you get a burger and/or eggs the way you like them?

Pretty sure you can't with the burger but eggs might fly if you ask nicely. Order them that way in the sit down main DR and they are wrong send them back. I recall seeing a sign posted about the burger has to be well done or at some certain temp. before serving.

F5Loar is correct about the hamburgers, no medium rare. I prefer medium rare also but never had one that tasted like shoe leather. They are pretty good.

Due to various illness associated with raw meats such as beef, they must be cooked to a certain temp inside. No medium rare is allowed. This is propbably true for steaks as well so if you want medium to well done it should work. Meats done on outside grill/BBQ have to be well done to meet the guide lines.

When I ordered eggs benedict on my last cruise, the waiter explained the new policy.

He started with "We no long serve the eggs poached for eggs benedict. The cruiseline is now adhering to U.S. guidelines for cooking & preparing foods". Now the eggs benedict has become the egg mcmuffin if anyone has ordered it.

So.. this is the guidelines for RCCL.. don't know about HAL until I sail and order eggs benedict for breakfast..

There is a note that hamburgers must be cooked "well done". We have never experienced bad hamburgers on HAL. They cook them first, keep them in a warmer, and then quickly finish them on the grill.

Steaks and other beefs, you can get rare or any way you like them either in the main dining room, Lido, or Pinnacle Grill.

Have never had a problem getting eggs the way we like them either in the dining room or the Lido.

If something comes the way you don't like it (except hamburgers) - send it back.

Unfortunately for me....I love HAL's burgers. I rarely let myself have them at home so they are a treat when aboard. I wish they were the shoe leather you describe so I wouldn't be tempted. Funny as it may seem to some, it's the "fast food" that is the treat for us when we are aboard the ships. We eat very healthy at home and hardly ever enjoy a pizza or burger or fries and such.....But, when on the ships, we do have those things.

...as well as the lean and healthy offerings of the salad bar

I had the Eggs Benedict a few weeks ago on Maasdam and they were perfect to me. They were soft boiled/poached and were runny but not raw runny. It was far from what I call the McDonalds Eggmcmuffin. The egg had the swirled in boiling water look to it. You can only get the Benedict in the main DR. Lido does not have them so I doubt you could get a poached egg on the Lido. You can get fried eggs sunnyside up. We didn't think much of HAL's burgers. On other lines we always liked them but HAL's didn't have it to us. Not shoe leather but not tasty. But the Taco Bar is nice!

If you don't like the burgers - try the Wok station!

They had the yummiest Pad Thai and Ginger Beef stir-fry...

Well, I guess I won't be eating any hamburgers onboard, then. Well done? *shudders* I'll take my burgers medium rare and my steak rare, thanks. Set mine where it can get a nice view of the grill while the others are cooking, thanks. :-)

Husband had the eggs benedic on the Maasdam a couple of times and loved them. The eggs were just a little runny.

Like s7s said, at home we never have hamburgers, french fries, pizza, etc., so we enjoy those treats on a cruise. Most of them we do eat healthy on a cruise with a treat once in a while.

Ah just slip the grill guy a $2 bill and tell him you want to have it "your" way nice and juicy. Who's he going tell? Those guys never see tips (or they didn't use too but not sure about the new mandatory automatic our way tip policy). Just like the eggs, when you ask him for over easy or sunny side up watch him and say "whoa, that's it, give it to me now". And I would always send back a steak in any resturant land or sea that did get my medium rare with that hot pink center.

The reason for the different rule on hamburgers compared to steaks is due to the way the meat is processed. The germs (if any) tend to be on the outside of the meat. Grinding the meat for hamburger mixes them throughout the patty. That means it has to be cooked through to kill the germs. On a steak they are only on the outside so cooking the outside kills the germs. Chicken and pork should be cooked through because some of the germs live in the meat.
