Adding money to Oyster card?

Recommended Posts

How do we add money to our existing Oyster Cards? We have Oyster cards from our trip in 2012 that still have some money remaining on them and would just like to add more to them for our next visit to London.

Just go the website and you can put on as much as you like. If you can't do that you can add at most Underground stations which are still manned or at the machines with a credit card which has a chip.

We have done it for our yearly London visits since the Oyster cards began in 2003.

Thank you for your helpful response.

The machines in the Underground still accept magnetic strip credit cards.

ISTR that you have to specify a Tube station at which you will "collect" the credit if you do this, so be careful to make sure that you specify the correct one.

You don't need to go to the ticket office to collect a credit that's waiting for you. All you need to do is to enter the station, touching your Oyster to the yellow pad in the usual way. The credit will be uploaded onto your card as you do so, in addition to the usual fare calculation operations.

And cold hard cash, too.

We also had Oyster cards from 2012 and used the a few weeks ago. We had no problem adding money (using cash) via the machines at any Tube station. On the last day of our trip, we did redeem them for our GBP 5 deposit per card and they also refunded any remaining balance on the cards.

Do Oyster Cards need to be "redeemed" at a tube station before we leave, or can they be redeemed at the airport?

If you want to refund them over the counter, this has to be done at a Tube station.

If you're departing from an airport that has a Tube station (ie Heathrow), you can do it there. Otherwise you will have to do it at a Tube station before you travel to the airport. For a lesson learned, see here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=43133236#post43133236

Note that the DLR ticket office at London City Airport is not a Tube ticket office and will not refund Oysters.

But don't do it too much in advance, as the credit only sits there for 8 days waiting to be uploaded. If you don't touch in "collect" the credit within the 8 day period, then it is automatically refunded.
