gonole1972 Posted July 7, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Could the propulsion issues not be a problem on Golden but instead the reduced speed restrictions put into place in June slowing everyone down? We got a call 3 weeks from Harv and Marv that we will arrive in Juneau 1 hour late so this has been going on awhile. See article: http://www.travelerstoday.com/articles/10289/20140610/cruise-ships-assigned-speed-limit-in-alaska-to-keep-whales-safe.htm
peety3 Posted July 7, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2014 If you read that article, you'll see that the speed restrictions are in effect while in Glacier Bay National Park. That would only apply to the time when the ship is in...GBNP. That could have a tiny bearing on overall transit time between ports of call or origin/destination, but I think there are other mentions of technical issues on the Golden that are impacting transit speed and therefore transit time. If I had to guess, I'd guess that one of the diesel engines is out of service.
Astro Flyer Posted July 7, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Last summer GBNP had speed limits in affect however it did not delay our arrival into ports.
Pam in CA Posted July 7, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 7, 2014 (edited) Last summer GBNP had speed limits in affect however it did not delay our arrival into ports. This summer alone, the speeds have been changed three times. That's just in the past six weeks. Speed was reduced, then increased and now reduced again. It depends on whether there are whales sailing in the area. The good news is that if speeds are reduced, your chances of seeing wildlife increase. Edited July 7, 2014 by Pam in CA

onefine89 Posted July 7, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Golden Princess had technical propulsion issues reported by a CC member last week and a very short stop in Victoria due to late arrival. As Pam mentioned also about whales moving in the area of cruise line routes and slowing down........here's some history on the Sapphire Princess........cruise line fined over $200K for the incidents....... Sapphire Princess July 2009 Whale strike occurred with a 70 ft Fin Whale lodged at the bulbous bow sighted while docking at Vancouver, BC July 2010 Whale strike occurred with a 40 ft Humpback Whale lodged at the bulbous bow sighted while docking at Vancouver, BC
