Does anyone have recent experience using Viber on river cruises or in port? There was a report from 2013 that it didn't work through the ship's wifi system, but many cruise lines have been upgrading their systems.

Can't speak for Viber, but we used FaceTime, voice only, while on board the Avalon Impression. Since it was over WiFi, it was free; i.e., no data "charges". Probably could have done video, too, but never tried. Of course, both ends need to be iOS.

That's not a problem since we're an all iOS family. And voice only is great. Have you heard the review "a face made for radio"? ;)
