But I seem to recall in 2007 paying with euros. Do you reckon I'll be safe on using euros this time? We'll be touring the town on our own.

They generally take Euros in Croatia however, the market straight across from the dock where the ship berthed in Split (April this year) would only take local money or a CC ; go figure ;)

get some Kuna ...Croatians find it rude that tourists expect them to take Euro's, quite rightly so too if you ask me
