Belize on your own

It's been a long time since I went ashore at the port of Belize. At that time, it was a long tender ride and there was almost nothing there. After that, I always booked dive excursions and never went ashore on the mainland. My questions are: What is the port of Belize like now? Is it practical to do Belize on our own, or would it be a better idea to book a ship's excursion? We're scheduled to be at anchor only from 7 AM until 4 PM ship's time.

Not a lot has changed. In the past 5 or 6 years, they've done some expansion on the tender pier. Tender times haven't decreased. But it's still either a ship excursion or a private excursion. I think Sea Sport Diving is still around. I believe they have a website. They're only a block or two from the tender pier. Unfortunately they can't come and pick you up from the ship.
