Hotel in South Beach?

In the summer perhaps, but a South Beach 4-star is going to run you a bit more than that in the winter! Prices are UP this winter bigtime

If you want to be near the action then you generally want to be in, or within a few blocks of, Ocean Drive, Collins, and Washington Avenues between roughly 5th and 15th Streets or Lincoln Road Mall.

Here are some nice mid-priced hotels...

I checked the Courtyard Marriot for mid-March 2006 and it's running $200+. It appears that SB hotels in the winter are running sky-high! Some of the less expensive hotels according to this board and tripadvisor.com are not good. We stayed at the Holiday Inn South Beach two years ago. It's a great location but the hotel itself is dated and in need of a big-time facelift. We paid $169 in 2003 for March. Priceline is probably your best bet or stay in downtown Miami which is much less expensive but cabs are pricey to and from SB.

That old Holiday Inn you stayed in isn't going to get a facelift... It's getting the wrecking ball later this year :)

It's going to be replaced by a new W Hotel, that will be considerably more expensive to stay in ;)

We stayed at the Doubletree on Collins Ave when we were in South Beach. What we liked most about this hotel was that if you went out the back door you were in the pool area and then the beach, with alot of the hotels in South Beach you aren't ON the beach.

Trent...Am I correct on this?

The classic Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive between 5th & 15th Streets are not directly ON the beach, they're across the street from it. Above 15th Street on Collins Avenue though many are directly on the beach. The South Beach Marriott on Ocean Drive below 5th is directly on the beach, and Loews at 16th & Collins is as well.
