What do they all mean?

Recommended Posts

Hello to all-

I'm fairly new to the boards here...What is up with all the shorthand abbreviations in the posts? I'm not saying they're bad...I just don't know what half of them mean. After being on the boards for a few weeks, I've picked up on some. I would think I'm not the only "newbie" that has had this problem. For all the seasoned CC folks-do you mind giving us "newbies" a rundown of your lingo? Think it might be of help to some folks. THANKS!:)

Here are just a few. I'll let others fill in additional terms:

LOL - Laughing out loud

DH/DD/DW/DS, et al - Dear Husband, Dear Daughter, Dear Wife, Dear Son, etc. The "D" could also be devoted. In certain instances, you can draw you own conclusions for other meanings;).

IMHO - In my humble opinion

WWYD - What would you do?

Any others you were wondering about?

Ok here goes some

it's a ship not a bost unless you are talking tenders.

Bow is the front (pointy end)

Aft (back of the ship)

Port (Left)

Starboard (right-side)

Deck is the floor

Bulkhead is the wall

the head is the bathroom

DH Dear/dumb/darn Husband

DW Dear Wife (or she who must be obeyed)

SO Sinificant Other (sp)

BF Boyfriend

GF Girlfriend

(sp) Spelling error/don't know how to spell it

DD Dear Daughter

DS Dear son

Mil Mother-In-Law

Fil Father-in-law

lol Laugh out loud

IMO In My Opinion

Sometimes the ship's names are shortened, then you may have to read the whole thread to figure out which one they mean

CP Caribbean Princess

VOS Voyager of the Seas or Vision ofthe Seas

NOS Navigator of the Seas

FOS Freedom of the Seas

POA Pride of Aloha

POAM Pride of America

CaptData : SO Sinificant Other (sp)

Captain, I am definitely not correcting your spelling, but this is much funnier the way you posted it than with the missing "g". Please don't take offense, but I love these little Freudian moments. Just my dirty mind at work.

CaptData: CP Caribbean Princess

This one always confuses me since I see it both ways. I thought CP was the Coral Princess and CB was the Caribbean Princess.

A few others:

OP = Original Poster

SIL/BIL = Sister-in-law/Brother-in-law

Often you'll see the cruise ship abbreviated as in JOS = Jewel of the Seas

That last one get overused (IMO) a lot, considering there are 3 M's, 3 S's, 3 E's, 2 R's and 2 V's in Royal Caribbean's fleet.

Too often you see a post like "I'm sailing on the SOS next week and need to know ....".

Well, we need to know if that's the Sovereign, Splendour, or Serenade.

To the OP-- I had problems with this lingo when I first arrived here at the boards. If you hang around for awhile .you will pick it up quickly. Another one I just thought of--BTW (by the way). BTW, welcome to the boards. There is no better place to find out everything you ever wanted to know about cruising and you don't have to be afraid to ask!!!!!
