tokyo1949 Posted October 21, 2014 #26 Share Posted October 21, 2014 Well that was the source you referenced for your thread without mention of the roll call information. And as to the CDC, while there are other conditions regarding the reporting requirements to the CDC for noro outbreaks on cruise ships, the level of passengers or crew affected needs to reach 2% of the total on board before notification is given. So on a ship with say 3,500 passengers and crew that threshold would be 70 people affected. Not just "many" as the article references. We were on the 28th Sept sailing on AOS and we were advised prior to boarding that they had a gastrointestinal problem on the preceding cruise and were deep cleansing. Whilst on board people were also ill and we were told a total of 91 passengers had been ill out of over 3250. The crew and officers did all they could to get this under control and towards the end of the cruise were serving everyone in the Windjammer. Most people were adhering to the request to continually wash your hands and use the hand sanitiser at every opportunity but there were still passengers who did not wash their hands and /or refused the sanitiser. You could not fault RCCL for the care in this matter and thankfully us and our friends were fine in fact we never spoke to anyone who had been ill during the cruise. allentownahoy Posted October 21, 2014 #27 Share Posted October 21, 2014 My son works on the Independence which followed the same itinerary, getting to each port a day later. They did not have any noro but crew did a pre-emptive deep clean on turnover day in Southhampton just to be safe. Talk about proactive.
tokyo1949 Posted October 22, 2014 #28 Share Posted October 22, 2014 The MTDR did appear to be underused in the evenings during the second week, with the staff trying hard to use up surplus food We were also on that cruise and did not see anyone missing from tables around us and never spoke to anyone that had been ill. On a Celebrity ship 2 years ago they had hundreds ill and it was much worse than AOS and everyone you met had been ill or their cabinmate was. I dont believe the numbers ever reached the 400 number that someone mention. No point the captain lying to passengers and you would never be told by crew members the number as they are not allowed to. Each time we left or returned to the ship the medical centre was empty. As regard to the filling out of a form on the last night that is common practice as some people do not report being ill as they dont want to be quarantined and so that is why they ask the question again so that the cabin be deep cleansed. Missus Makkem Posted October 22, 2014 #29 Share Posted October 22, 2014 It might be common practice for the form about illness as far as you know but in alll our many cruises we have never before had one of these.

We were told an actual figure at the Captain's Q and A which was 91 confirmed cases with 3- 6 new cases daily. Also we commented how quiet the MDR was. As for the medical centre being empty, those reporting symptoms were visited in their cabins and quarantined- we know this for sure after speaking to two elderly ladies who had both been unfortunate enough to catch the virus. Big_G Posted October 22, 2014 #31 Share Posted October 22, 2014 In 'this' case, the OP and the site mentioned were right! You may not like that, but it seems to be true! Even a monkey picking random answers to multiple choice questions gets it right 35% of the time. ...or even a blind nut will eventually find a squirrel. Bazzito Posted October 22, 2014 #32 Share Posted October 22, 2014 Interesting that their home port is Southampton. My wife and I took the Independence OTS from Southampton to Ft. Lauderdale (Sail Date: 11/22/12) and I recall everyone being held in the terminal awaiting boarding while the ship was "deep cleaned" from a Norovirus outbreak on the arriving cruise. We were late departing in very rough seas, which smoothed out after our stop in Lisbon. We noticed that, in addition to the never ending notices to wash hands frequently and the constant presence of the anti-bacterial hand gel everywhere, they had glass shields over all of the items in the Windjammer, which were served to you by staff. And they pressed everyone into service, including dancers and musicians. I talked with one of the band members later in the cruise and he confirmed that, indeed, serving in the buffet as needed was part of the job. They also provided salt & pepper only in little individual paper packets. After about four days, the sneeze guards disappeared, the salt & pepper shakers were back on the table, and it was self-serve for the balance of the trip, the outbreak stopped, apparently. I talked with a number of the staff about this during the cruise and they all agreed that they were looking forward to the Caribbean destinations. They mentioned that the Norovirus was much more common on the European cruises as the European travelers, to put it nicely, "have a different standard of personal hygiene than their American counterparts."
