What to do in Vigo, Spain for the Day

Any suggestion on what to do in Vigo??????

 

Don't know anything about Vigo or what to do on our own so any suggestions from fellow cruisers that have been then would be much appreciated.

Vigo was an easy city to walk around and a fun one to explore. We were there in 1999 during our Honeymoon cruise. We took a half day excursion to a Casino/Spa (sorry can't remember the name), but they city itself was more than enjoyable. Remember Siesta time! everything shuts down between 12:00 and 4:00pm (good time for a long lunch)

Take this full day tour which includes lunch at the Parador Hotel. Don't miss the swinging of the censer during mass. The censer is so large it requires four or five priests to swing it. The arc is across the largest part of the cathedral

 

Santiago de la Compostela, the Cathedral of St. James, located near the port of Vigo. For centuries pilgrims have walked across the breadth of Europe to visit the burial place of St. James. His remains rest in a silver sepulcher located in the cathedral’s lower burial chamber. The cathedral is the quintessential example of gothic architecture. The effect of the interior sculptures, paintings and carvings was so overwhelming that I experienced near sensory overload. This is a site that deserves more time to explore and understand. There is an excellent five star hotel, The Parador, adjacent to the cathedral. Any return visit to Europe would include booking a couple of days there to better appreciate this amazing cathedral and its surroundings.

If there is an excursion to La Toya Island (I think that was the name of it) don't go! We did and it was an absolute bust. Spain turned out to be our least favorite port because we didn't make a good choice on the excursion. I hope you do better.

We took the ship's tour to the Mussel Farm. If you love mussels in white wine and garlic with lots of local white wine to wash them down, then this is what you should do. A bus took us up the river and then we transfered to a boat with covered inside seating. They took us out to the barges and stopped to show us how they farm the mussels. On the way back they had cooked up 2 large pots of large mussels and and passed them out along with a bottle of local white wine ( All you could eat and drink). We were stuffed when we returned. I think I ate about 3 doz. mussels and a bottle of wine myself.The mussels were large and plump and well prepared. As we love mussels and wine this was one of the best tours we took. Do't know if they still offer this tour. I am not sure I would take this tour if it was not offered by the ship.

When we were in Vigo two years ago and we shared a taxi with another couple and went to Santiago de la Compostela for the day. We arranged for the taxi to return at a certain time and he was there waiting for us. There were taxis waiting at the pier.

 

We didn't pay him until we returned to the ship. I think it cost each couple around 70Euros. It was a great trip and well worth it. Santiago is a lovely city, besides its religious significance, it is a University town and has lots of great little restaurants and interesting streets to wander around.
