WeLuvVacation Posted August 20, 2005 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2005 If you are using the same airline for both legs of the flight the bags will be transferred by the airline. If not I do not know the proceedure.

geo_traveler Posted August 20, 2005 #4 Share Posted August 20, 2005 You'll actually have to collect your bags in NY to go through immigration and customs. Then there will be a place to hand your bags back to the luggage handlers, and you can go to your next gate.
jani Posted August 20, 2005 #5 Share Posted August 20, 2005 The problem flying from the UK to San Juan via New York, is that you will need to claim your bags in New York because this is where you will clear US customs and immigration, even if flying onwards on the same company. Usually (but not always), you will receive baggage tags that are already tagged to your final destination (San Juan), but this only allows you to hand over your bags back to luggage handlers (in new York) as soon as you have cleared customs. If you do not receive tags until the final destination, you might need to haul the bags to the departing terminal of the airline that takes you from New York to San Juan. -jani
