7 Days Til Glory!- Eastern- A Few Questions

Hey guys, I leave for Nassau, St.Thomas, San Juan and Grand Turk in 7 days onboard the Glory again!

I have a few questions, and I was hoping I could get them answered here. Note: I'm not stingy. If you visited St.Thomas on the Breeze or Conquest, your input is valued just as much as someone else's. :)

1) On what day is the "Behind the Fun" tour? How much is it?

2) Are things still taxed/ not duty free in St.Thomas and San Juan?

3) Where can we get maps of San Juan? We made Nassau and San Juan or DIY days, and I have an old Nassau map, but I need one for San Juan.

4) What night is the deck party on?

5) Can I use my phone in San Juan and/or St.Thomas? I have a Sprint iPhone 5C and I have read that people have used their phones for no roaming there because they are US territories, but I want to make sure before I flip it off airplane mode.

6) How do I know where we'll be docking in St.Thomas?

7) Any must-sees in these ports? We plan to do the following:

Nassau: No excursion, walking around, shopping, Queen Anne's staircase, possibly Junkanoo Beach for pictures.

St.Thomas: "St.John Trunk Bay Snorkel Trails and Beach" excursion booked through Carnival.Really excited for this. Is the Skyride worth it? We may not dock next to that mountain, so I don't know. How much are cabs over if we dcide to take it?

San Juan: No excursion, DIY walking tour of Old San Juan. Any good places for lunch?

Grand Turk: "Grand Turk Stand-Up Paddleboarding, Snorkel and Beach Break" excursion through Carnival, possibly shopping and hanging around the beach near the dock before heading back onto the ship.

If you have any additional comments about the Glory, itinerary, etc., please feel free to add it. Thanks so much for any help you can provide in advance, thank you!!! :D:D:D

I am looking at this cruise so I hope someone answers your questions. I have been to Grand Turk, which is lovely, but none of the others!

I too hope people answer. You would think someone would have an answer to even 1 question.

Hope you book, Glory is one of my favorite ships! :D

Not sure how much help I'll be. We did the same cruise on the Glory two years ago and had a great time. The behind the fun tour is $95 dollars and I think you have to book it at the customer service desk as soon as you get on board as spaces are limited.

In St Thomas we docked in Amalie and I believe that is the only place to dock...somebody may correct me. It is a little cove so when we were there several others where docked in the same place. The sky ride was just soso. I think it was $25 each and it was a fairly nice but short ride up the hill, if you've been on one gondola ride this one will be the same. It does take you to the top and there are a few shops and places to stop for a drink and some touristy type photo shoot options but all in all that was about it. Since you are on a tour you will probably drive by an area with similar views so I would say save your money. It is located right beside the pier so if you do decide to do it you can choose last minute. There was a bit of a line to get on but it moves quickly and we did it first thing in the am with everyone else so it'll probably quieter later in the day.

San Juan was a lovely city for just walking around. It had cobblestone streets, great architecture and lots of great little spots to just sit and people watch. We didn't plan anything for SJ either but when we go off the ship tour companies where selling tours of the city for 20 dollars a person. It was a great tour that took us to the forts, City hall, a small little beach with the best waves ever and a bit of shopping beside the beach if you preferred. It lasted a few hours and since the forts were our last stop we had them drop us there and we walked backed to the ship on our own giving us time to shop(all the to American stores are there) and sightsee.

It's a great ship and itinerary...have fun

Hey guys, I leave for Nassau, St.Thomas, San Juan and Grand Turk in 7 days onboard the Glory again!

2) Are things still taxed/ not duty free in St.Thomas and San Juan? I don't remember being taxed on things that I got in St Thomas when I was there in Jan of last year

3) Where can we get maps of San Juan? I have seen some maps on wiki before, but I don't believe that they are as thorough as the ones actually handed out on the ship.

5) Can I use my phone in San Juan and/or St.Thomas? I have a Sprint iPhone 5C and I have read that people have used their phones for no roaming there because they are US territories, but I want to make sure before I flip it off airplane mode. I used my phone in San Juan for some calls to family and some texting and did not get any extra charges on my phone bill with Verizon Wireless. I don't know about St Thomas

6) How do I know where we'll be docking in St.Thomas?

When I went, we docked at the west indian company dock. It was right near a little mall area.

You can easily see the forts on your own as they are just an uphill walk. I don't know about places to eat really as after walking around a bit we just went into senor frogs here to have some cold ones.

Only other thing to add is enjoy your cruise. If you are an early riser, get to the "secret" deck areas to watch and photograph as you near your ports.

Also, the breakfast burritos at the Blue Iguana are a great alternative to the buffet area in the morning.

We have Sprint too, and were able to use our phones without any additional charges.

6) How do I know where we'll be docking in St.Thomas? It's pretty much just one place that CCL docks there.

7) Any must-sees in these ports? We plan to do the following:

San Juan: No excursion, DIY walking tour of Old San Juan. Any good places for lunch? There is a free bus/trolley...make sure to ride it to El Morro.

Grand Turk: "Grand Turk Stand-Up Paddleboarding, Snorkel and Beach Break" excursion through Carnival, possibly shopping and hanging around the beach near the dock before heading back onto the ship. We made this our beach day. Got off the ship early and claimed loungers in what was a prime location for us.

If you have any additional comments about the Glory, itinerary, etc., please feel free to add it. Thanks so much for any help you can provide in advance, thank you!!! :D:D:D

And have a great time!

Do you know about data? like if I wanted to check emails or social networks?

Thanks for your help!

When you are in San Juan, you are for all intents and purposes in the US as far as your phone carrier is concerned (unless explicitly excluded in your contract). So, if you have a data package, it should work in port too.

For AT&T customers (you can see it covers the US Virgin Islands but not Grand Turk):

https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html

For on ship, you can buy data but it will be expensive.

We did almost the same itinerary on the Liberty in January. We did the St. John tour. They picked us up in a boat right by where the ship was docked. It was a nice boat ride to St. John. They had truck/buses to take us to trunk bay. A couple stops along the way. We had about two hours at trunk, then the truck/busses picked us up and we took the same boat back. Loved the trip. After they handed out snorkel gear we were cut loose and told when to meet up to head back. There is a small food/drink stand there and some tshirts. Take some cash if your are interested. Otherwise, no stops.

San Juan I printed off maps and a walking tour from my pc before we left. It's really easy to get around. We headed to the fountain, out of the city walls, then back in and up to el morro. Then headed back down into town, saw the Catholic Church, got a piña colada at barrachina, and just looked around. It was very interesting.

1) On what day is the "Behind the Fun" tour? How much is it? Not sure.

2) Are things still taxed/ not duty free in St.Thomas and San Juan? They have plenty of duty free shopping in ST/SJ.

Yes, I have used my Sprint phone there before.

6) How do I know where we'll be docking in St.Thomas? I only found out on arrival.

7) Any must-sees in these ports? We plan to do the following:

San Juan: No excursion, DIY walking tour of Old San Juan. Any good places for lunch? Buses in Old San Juan are free of charge. El Morro is an excellent fort to visit (that's the one you pass entering the harbor).

Grand Turk: "Grand Turk Stand-Up Paddleboarding, Snorkel and Beach Break" excursion through Carnival, possibly shopping and hanging around the beach near the dock before heading back onto the ship.

Anybody used ATT in those ports?

Your ATT plan will work in San Juan and St Thomas exactly as it would work for you at home. I have used my ATT for a number of years now in both these ports.

We will be on the same cruise and I have done the same itinerary before. Yes AT&T are free in St Thomas and San Juan. The fort walk around is fantastic even if you have seen them before. Cab be quite a walk til you see all of San Juan. St Thomas, I always head to Coki Beach, love the water with all the fish swimming around. I do take some dog biscuits or cereal to feed them, some discussion that is may be bad for the fish. Gran Turk, Margaritaville is a must, even if you have little ones. Nassau, been there done that too many times. Seems to be a popular sentiment on the boards. How many t shirts and crafts, (some not even native) do you need to see.

Nassau: No excursion, walking around, shopping, Queen Anne's staircase, possibly Junkanoo Beach for pictures. I know a great tour operator that does an island tour if you're interested. I'm either going to Atlantis Casino or staying on the ship.

Any good places for lunch? definitely Raices. It was featured on Man vs Food for a "mean" porkchop.

Grand Turk: "Grand Turk Stand-Up Paddleboarding, Snorkel and Beach Break" excursion through Carnival, possibly shopping and hanging around the beach near the dock before heading back onto the ship.

I have AT&T and was researching it tonight. If I understand correctly, there will be no roaming charges for data, phone or text. I am going to call to be sure.

You can use the ATT link I posed on the first page to verify the coverage (and even the data speed if you so desire). I also emailed you about the slot pull....

This doesn't have anything to do with the ports, but in the Fun Times when you see decade music trivia with Dr. E (cruise director) at the Casino bar....this is NOT to be missed. There will be several throughout the week. I think 3 total. Best time I have had in a long time. :)

I just got off the Glory a couple weeks ago, the behind the fun tour was on the last sea day. Started with meeting at the library at 9am and ended a little after noon. It's $95 per person and they only have 16 spots each cruise. Book it when you get on board that first day. That was the first place we went and we were the first signed up.

Both my hubby and I really liked the tour and we said we would do it again on a different class ship.

No cameras or phones allowed and they have security pat you down to make sure. We visited the laundry, crew areas, back of the stage, galley, engine control room and the bridge. We met the captain and got to ask questions.
