Question re smoking on the TP

After seeing Travergirl's recent review, I'm a bit concerned about the level of smoke being blown in my face while on the ship, and was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this? If it was up to me, I'd be flippin all those crazy Euro smokers overboard, but sadly, I don't think my future wife, or "the law" will allow it.

So, for those who have sailed this cruise, just how bad is the smoke? And where am I most likely to run into a cloud of the stuff? Is the dining room non-smoking? Please tell me people can't smoke in cabins. Etc.

Thanks.

Don't wory too much. I am the biggest smike hater there is and I never found it to be a problem. I believe you can not smoke in the dining rooms and the only place I found it to be even a slight issue was in the casino.

It was an incredible trip. Don't let the thought of smoking ruin it for you!

I would like to know how bad this is, too. Please, anyone who's been on this cruise, let us know! Is there a "smoking" side and "non-smoking" side of the ship, like on larger ships? Also, any tips on how to best avoid the smoking would be great!

Sadly, it is my understanding that people can and do smoke in their cabins on all crusie ships. There are threads and threads on other areas of these boards about smoke coming in through balcony doors.

I think most ships are non smoking in the dining rooms. There is usually a special place that they can smoke. You can sure tell who the smokers are when you walk past their cabins:eek:  I hate it too!! We have never in 12 cruises had a smelly cabin.

I am sorry that I smoke and that I am a European and that I offend you all but I really don't think I deserve to be thrown overboard for it. You can avoid some smoke if you choose not to sit down next to smokers and I will be smoking in my cabin and on my balcony.

While people may not like smoke I do not think that smokers are the worst forms of life you may chance to come across.

OK that's off my chest while I light up a ciaggrette to smoke while enjoying my coffee ah sheer bliss.

Err... I think somebody needs to put down the nicotine and start smoking something a little more mellowing... might I suggest a cruise to Jamaica?

Nobody hates you because you smoke. We would just prefer you not blow smoke into our lungs. No need to feel down. As to the European comment, relax, you Brits won't really be European till you join the Collective and start using the Euro.

It may depend when you go too. August is a big travel month for Europeans. They close their shops down and go on vacation for a few weeks. You may not encounter this other months.

No smoking is allowed in the dining room, but there was not a non-smoking side of the ship like larger ships. On my cruise they were smoking in the lobby, the gift shop, the casino, the photo place, in the pool. There definitley were a lot of people smoking in their cabins becuase I could smell it as we waked down the halls.

Thankfully our cabin was fine. I hear those air cleaner machines do wonders to them.

I will tell you that we are also on the same cruise as you and we don't smoke either. Husband used to, but thankfully for me he quit. So that is 3 more people on the ship that are smokeless. It is hard to deal with when you don't smoke at all. There are still a few in my husbands family that to light up and it does bother me. Try not to get anywhere near them and that is about how it is on a cruise also. I do respect that people do smoke, but like you, I don't care to have it right next to me either. Maybe we will be lucky and it won't be bad. See you next July on the cruise.

We are on this cruise in a month, and we are both non-smokers and not worried about everyone else's smoke one bit. I figured I'd be too busy enjoying myself to worry about what everyone else is doing, let alone have time to complain about it. It's smoke. You're not moving onto the ship for the rest of your life. And to assume that all the smokers are from Europe is pretty short-sighted, as is assuming they are purposefully "blowing smoke" down my lungs. I've met just as many North American smokers on cruises and vacations as Europeans, and I don't see us doing anything any different than the Europeans do...

On my many cruises including 7 on the R4 (Tahitian Princess), the main smoking issue for me has been in the casinos on nearly all ships. I eliminated this problem by avoiding the casinos. I now have a lot more money for tattoos, booze, dangerous extreme sports. I use to like a nice Cuban cigar now or then, but have not had one in at least a couple of years.

Perhaps his comment about throwing people overboard (Europeans especially - there are pleanty of smokers here in the USA) was a bit unfortunate, however his general concern was valid. Why do we non-smokers who concienciously choose not to endanger our lives needlessly need to be overwhelmed with cancer causing second hand smoke on our vacation. If you want to kill yourselves that is your perogative - don't kill me!

Ok no there is no smoking in the dining room, all lounges (except the casino) and the port side outside you can smoke and yes you can still smoke in your cabin and on your balcony.

I don't smoke and I don't let this issue bother me and at least any smokers I run into or that I am friends with always step away from the crowd to have a smoke and they are very aware to the fact most people don't like the habit or the effects.

To the OP I think 'flippin crazy european smokers overboard' indicates a strong dislike if not actual hate. I am usually a very mellow person without the aid of artifical substances apart from the nicotine however I am not sure I like being called a crazy european smoker and the last time I checked my passport states EU citizen or some such like even though I don't use Euros unless across the channel.

Mmmm interested in the comments I would receive if I took your advice and smoked somthing slightly less legal than nicotine on board.

If you all wish to avoid someone who will smoke only in allowed places including the cabin and the balcony please do not sail 9 May 06, note the European date.

You'd think patrons from a country that brought us Benny Hill and Monty Python could recognize that I was not actually advocating that smoking Europeans (or any other nationality for that matter) be thrown overboard. There's a fine line between seriousness and jest... but in this case that line is a few miles wide and I hardly think anything I said can be interpreted as "hate."

Yes, like others, I don't want to be on a smoky cruise. That's about all the serious stuff from my original post. Sorry you couldn't see that. You may need 10 days in the tropics more than me at this point.

Thanks to everyone for the replies on the smoke situation. Good to hear that it's not as bad as I was beginning to fear.

Don't usually get involved in posts about smoking but this one really got me going. I am what I consider a considerate smoker I will always move away where possible if there are non smokers around me. I also never smoke in hotel rooms or cruise ship staterooms ( do smoke on the balcony) guess that will get a reaction. Just can't work out why people turn so rabid and intolerant on this subject and tar every smoker with the same brush.

Anyway Ms Jo just thought I would let you know we are two couples from New Zealand also booked May 9th all smokers so there will be a few of us to throw overboard.

Blue Kiwi

It will be good to have your support when people are trying to throw the crazy European smoker overboard (lol).

We are hoping to do LA - Papeete - NZ - Fiji - LA on this trip as we feel if we are flying so far we might as well go all the way so this will be a 28 day trip.

We hope to have about 4 days stopover in NZ but we can't decide between Aukland or Christchurch as we really don't know much about either - any advice?

Hi Jo

Hard question I have to be biased as I am a North Islander live in Auckland which is NZ's biggest city. The South Island is very different and really beautiful in parts if it is adventure and real natural beauty you are after you should be heading to Queenstown in the South Island it is amazing. Auckland has lot's of lovely beaches and Islands in the Gulf you can visit but I guess it is just another big city built around an amazing harbour. Fours days is probably not enough time but there is never enough time. I guess this will just make you more confused.

Cheers

Wendy

Hi Wendy

I think you did help. With only 4 days I think Aukland would be a good idea. South Island does sound beautiful but we probably couldn't do it justice on such a short trip. We will have to save it for another time.

Have you seen a roll call for our sailing. I did search but didn't find one.

Jo
