schinz Posted August 27, 2005 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2005 We are taking a transatlantic cruise in October and am booking my shore excursion now, and need to know which port area has a better shopping district to get souvenirs - either Madeira Spain or Funchal Portugal. We are looking to book an all day tour at either port and wanted a 1/2 day tour with time for shopping in the other port. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Irishwhiskey Posted August 27, 2005 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2005 I believe Funchal is the capital city for Madiera Portugal. When we went there all the shops were closed on Sunday except the winery for cruise passengers only. The port wine is excellent.Better check and see what days you will be arriving at the ports. mikiew Posted August 28, 2005 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2005 Ummmmm. it is one in the same, and is a part of Portugal. There are not any really great bargains. The wine is okay, if you want to carry it home..........there are some nice linens..........
lysolqn Posted August 28, 2005 #4 Share Posted August 28, 2005 Funchal is lovely and while not a shopping capital, you'll find beautiful Portuguese linens and porcelain.
CaptData Posted August 28, 2005 #5 Share Posted August 28, 2005 Yes, be aware that Sunday is considered holy in Spain. Shops do not open except one or two that have vested interests. The lace is also very nice.
Rare greygypsy Posted August 28, 2005 #6 Share Posted August 28, 2005 The original poster may have Malaga Spain and Funchal Madeira confused. Get your goodies in Malaga and take a tour of Funchal - one of the most beautiful places in the world. Jeff
