travelinstructor Posted February 12, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2015 Have been to Rome a number of times and looking for an option for our day. Love small Italian towns, maybe some beach, a good restaurant. Not too excited about ruins - seen many. I am open to any suggestion
Rare Hlitner Posted February 12, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 12, 2015 We do have a suggestion, but the best way would be to rent a car in Civitavecchia. You would want to drive South of Civitavecchia to the beach town of Fregenae. If you are more adventurous and got tired of Fregenae you could go further south to explore Fiumcino (another beach town located close to the airport) or even make the trek all the way down to Anzio exploring the coast line. propanelady Posted February 15, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 15, 2015 We booked an excursion that went to Lucca and then Pisa. Lucca was really interesting. It still has it's walls intact, and they have a pedestrian path on top of the wall. There were lots of restaurants, and little shops.

Well that would have to be from Livorno (for Florence); Civitavecchia is the port for Rome. . .
2910car Posted February 16, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 16, 2015 We are on a b2b that docks in Civitavecchia and then leaves late afternoon. Wondering if there is anything worth doing in Civitavecchia itself since we have been to Rome twice already.
Rare Hlitner Posted February 16, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 16, 2015 We are on a b2b that docks in Civitavecchia and then leaves late afternoon. Wondering if there is anything worth doing in Civitavecchia itself since we have been to Rome twice already. Guess that depends on how you define (worth). Civitavecchia has actually improved in recent years to where it is now a pretty nice little port town. You can certainly stroll around town, stop for a nice lunch in one of the café/restaurants (or even in McDonalds if that is your thing) and stroll along the sea. But otherwise, there is really nothing much to do in Civitavecchia. As to other options in the area, some folks enjoy taking a tour (or just going on their own) north to nearby Tarquinia to explore and learn something about the Etruscan ruins. Although I am not personally a big fan of Tarquinia, there are others here on CC that have a different point of view. Hank

That sounds great!!! Just remember about the port construction moving the shuttle drop off farther from the train station, so be sure to allow extra time both ways. It's about a mile from the station now.
LondonTowner Posted February 18, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 18, 2015 I can't recall how many times I have been to Rome, but used to go at least once a year over about 40 years. I have never tired of it and certainly haven't seen everything.
