cruisinpips Posted March 3, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 3, 2015 I did take a poratble xm radio a few years ago to listen to college football, unfortunately, about 8-9 pm, we were so far out of range it stopped working. It only works on US based, or "aimed" sattelites from what I am told. No matter where I pointed it, it would not pick up. I had to sit on the top deck with it pointed back towards land to pick up that long. Hope this helps. This was an xm radio with a built in antenna. :D:D

kenholt Posted March 4, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted March 4, 2015 What about connecting via internet?
Sweet Dutch Girl Posted March 4, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 4, 2015 What about connecting via internet? Isn't the internet fee rather high on a ship? And isn't it quite slow? I don't think you can 'stream' using the ships' connection but I have no idea of how a satellite device via internet would translate.
jwalk03 Posted March 4, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 4, 2015 What about connecting via internet? You can connect via the internet and stream the available XM stations, however this would quickly get very expensive onboard (unless you have an unlimited internet package, which is also pricey) Also depending on the speed of internet onboard the streaming may be slow and choppy. I don't really know as I never purchase onboard internet service, I enjoy being cutoff from real life for a few days on board.
Emperor Norton Posted March 4, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 4, 2015 Besides the aforementioned issues there's the possibility that the ports XM uses for internet streaming would be blocked. Some cruise lines claim to block 'bandwidth intensive' applications.
