Rostock 6 to 8pm AND Kiel 7-5

Recommended Posts

Figure I would ask and see if anyone has any suggestions for me.

I did read through Anni's website and it seems like too many options to choose from... If I had only one day my plan would be Lubeck, but I have 2 days : )

We are arriving on Holland America's Eurodam and it says we arrive Rostock but it might really be Warnemunde not sure yet, that is another research question! One day we are docked between 6am and 8pm Rostock and another 7-5pm in Kiel. Both times they are mid week so will have the before 9am issue for the trains. Wondering if I want to go to Lubeck which day would be best to go? Also, I am open to renting a car at one of the locations so then we could possibly see Schwerin or who knows! What are some good ideas for the other day? Which would be better to use the train or the car?

My hubby and I want to see castles, picturesque lakes, churches, etc and like seeing it on our own.

Any guess which location would be easier to rent a car from the port? I was leaning towards Rostock since we are in port longer, but not sure the best plan. Is one of those going to be harder to drive/parking?

Thank you for your appreciation.

If you are arriving Rostock/Warnemünde on 17/07 then you will dock in the commercial port, otherwise your berth will be P7 at the Cruise Terminal in Warnemünde.

It is easier to visit Lübeck from Kiel. The train service is direct, every half hour and the journey time is around 1 hour. For timetable and fares see

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Car rental is easier from Warnemünde. Using Europcar, Sixt or Hertz you can order on-line and the car will be waiting when your ship docks.

http://www.sixt.com/car-rental/germany/rostock/rostock-warnemunde-cruise-ctr

https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/location/RLGN70?targetPage=locationDetail&eoag=RLGN70

By car from Warnemünde it would be possible to see the castles in both Schwerin and Ludwigslust, explore the many lakes in the Schwerin area and visit Wismar and Bad Doberan too. There are many other small castles and interesting sites in the area which are not accessible by public transport.

As long as you do not go into Rostock it would be possible to spend the whole day on minor roads with very little traffic. Parking in Schwerin and Wismar is not usually problem. Other places (castles etc.) which are open to the public usually have their own car parking facilities.

Bummer! It looks like Rostock is it for Holland America. Does that change your advice?

Any guesses how can I get a rental car from Rostock area?

Jenn

Hi Jenn, bad luck. Holland America calls here 12 times this year, with 3 different ships but only berths on LP41 once - Eurodam on 17/7 :( There will be 5 ships here that day, three at the Cruise Terminal and two over in the Port.

I am not sure if the rental companies do pickup etc at the docks but it might be worth an e-mail to ask.

Both Europcar and Sixt have pickup points at the main rail station in Rostock.

How to get to Rostock Hbf (main station) from the Port of Rostock, berths LP41 or LP31.

Shuttle service - if one is offered by your ship.

Taxi - the quickest way and not very expensive, especially when shared between several people. There are always taxis at the berth. (This would be my choice, at least on the way out in the morning ;))

Bus and train - there is a bus service to the nearest train station, Lütten Klein where you can pick up the s-bahn into Rostock main station .

The bus stop is on the main road about 50m from the dock gate. Bus #45 runs every half hour at 5mins past and 35mins past the hour, Monday to Friday. On Saturday and Sunday #45 runs hourly from 8:35

Return from Lütten Klein - Monday to Friday at 3mins past and 33 mins past the hour, last bus 20:03 (NB there is no bus at 19:33) . Saturday and Sunday at 3 mins past the hour, last bus 19:03.

Lütten Klein is a bus/train interchange and the buses stop right in the train station. The Rostock platform is through the subway. The s-bahn departs every 15 mins, every day.

Tickets can be bought from the machine on the bus.

The advice on what you can do is pretty much the same. The rail station is on the outskirts of Rostock so there is no real problem with a car from there. Still a good way to see the area if you want flexibility.

Happy cruising :)

  • 2 months later...

We apparently will be on the same cruise as the previous traveler.

Interested in getting to Laboe from our stop in Kiel.

Can you tell me the best (easiest) way to get there to visit the navy memorial.

What recommendations can you make for our stop in Rostock. We have no interest in taking a Berlin trip and spending that much time on a bus.

Hi,

There is a regular ferry service between the 'Seegarten' pier next to the cruise terminal and Laboe. The ride takes an hour through the sheltered waters of the fijord. Timetables and fares at

http://www.sfk-kiel.de/en

The memorial is just a short walk from the ferry terminal along the seafront. There is also a local bus which passes the memorial or you can take the 'Baderbahn', a small 'road train' which is certainly not just for the kids.

There is a lot to see and do in Rostock/Warnemünde most of which has been discussed on the thread

A good web site to visit is

[Thank you for being so helpful!

From what I understand, we (group of 4) will need to take a taxi from the ship to Rostock main station. From here we can take a train to Scherwin getting off at the HBF stop. A relatively short walk should get us into the city center and then the castle.

Returning we should exit the train at the Rostock main station. Will it be relatively easy to get a taxi at the station to take us back to the pier? And if possible if you know, what is the expected fare between the station and pier?

Trying to decide if this is something we can do ourselves or if we should just give up and book an excursion.

This vacation planning has been the most stressful I have ever come across and am almost not looking forward to this trip.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, thank you for your appreciation. Could you please give me the name of your ship and date of arrival. I presume from your plans that you are docking at either pier LP41 or LP31 but need to know before I can advise. Thankyou.

Anni.

We arrive July 17 on the Eurodam and will be berthed at LP41 from what I have found from another cruiser.
