Dim Sum in Chinatown

Recommended Posts

Going to Chinatown in 3 great cities and looking for good dim sum restaurants in San Francisco, Victoria and Vancouver. Any recommendations?

When in Victoria one of the best is Don Mee's in Chinatown. Chinatown is a 10-15 walk from the inner harbour.

Head straight down Government St to Fisgard turn left at the entrance and it's halfway down on the right hand side.

Government Street is the street in front of the Empress Hotel.

Can you read Chinese? How adventureous are you? Check out this link for award winners over the years for the Best Dim Sum category.

For those unable to read Chinese the following restaurants have high marks for bilingual menus. Some menus come with photo's to help.

I should clarify.... there's the historic Chinatown and then there's the new chinatown(s). The best choice in Vancouver's historic chiantown is the Floata. However it's closed in April for "renovations". Not sure how it will look when it reopens in May.

If you want to look at the better restaurants... look to the suggestions above.

The critics selections for best Chinese restaurants in Vancouver will be announced in just a couple of days here. Diners selections already out, with Kirin placing first, though I feel that the multiple locations are why Kirin places above Dynasty with most voters, it's simply better-known - more food critics & chefs have been consistently rating Dynasty as better over the last two-three years.

Really none of the best dim sum is in Vancouver's Chinatown - as the crow flies Dynasty on Broadway and Kirin's downtown branch are about a mile outside it, Sun Sui Wah a couple of miles south on Main, and pretty much everything else outside Vancouver proper.

Regardless of the new decor in Floata they're going to have to seriously up their game in the kitchen to entice me back - they are hands-down the most meh restaurant in Chinatown across the board IMO. They certainly do have size going for them - but unless you *need* a meal for literally hundreds of people all in the same resto, I would rather eat literally anywhere else around Chinatown.
