chances of getting an upgrade at the pier

Why not just purchase the type of cabin that you want? Looking for a freebie doesn't work too often anymore on cruises

Seems like cruising is not the way it used to be in the good old days. We used to receive upgrades on a regular basis.

 

The first cruise we ever went on around 30 years ago we got upgraded to a nice oceanview cabin on an upper deck when we had booked an inside cabin on the lowest deck. The gate agent told my husband since he is so tall he would have hit his head on the light fixtures in the lower hallway we were originally on.

 

In the old days the cruise lines used to give upgrades if they had it- it certainly enticed us to keep going with this same line. Unfortunately they are out of business now- maybe too many upgrades!

 

We have an OV cabin - I'll ask at the pier anyway but wont expect it.

These days the ships are filled to capacity on a regular basis, so upgrades at the pier simply aren't possible.

30 years ago passengers didn't have the internet with immediate access to available cabins and last minute price drops. :D

 

More common these days is an upsell where we pay the difference between the price of the cabin we booked originally and the one we want now.

 

But true upgrades, although rare, do still happen from time to time. When they occur, it is usually because the cruise line has a better likelihood of re-selling our original cabin than selling the one to which they are upgrading us.
