Why is POA so expensive???

As of now I have a Pacific Coastal cruise booked in September on the NCL Jewel to sort of get my feet wet with solo cruising. It's not my ideal cruise as I've already been to Vancouver/Victoria a couple of times but I just can't do Florida as I'm not a beach person. I thought about doing Hawaii for a week (culture/history) but would love to do a studio on the NCL POA. But the cost is around $2800!! Why? :confused:

Primary reason is that the POA is the only (that I know of) Ocean going passenger vessel of American registry. Accordingly, I believe it must meet US wage laws, including social security.

Check the June sailings. Sometimes they have low prices.

Thank you for this! I thought since summer was high season the fares would be at their peak so I was checking in the fall. It's still pricey but definitely more manageable.

If you go to that site someone else mentioned, look under the single cruise category and it shows a lot $$.

Also, I believe there are only 4 studio cabins on POA. Kind of makes them a hot commodity. There are times you can snag a better price for an inside cabin compared to what they charge for one of the studios.

 

Since the studio/solo community is so small on POA, I personally would not pay more to join. I would rather put the money toward a better cabin.

I can see prices clearly cheaper than $2,800, depending upon when you want to sail. These rates for solo passenger.

Hi

I am just back from a cruise on POA and can tell you that there are solo bargains to be had but you have to wait till 2-4 weeks out to book.

 

I tracked prices on this cruise for a couple of months which is easy to do as the itinerary and duration are the same all the time.

 

I booked 20 days out for late March and got an inside cabin for $1023 including taxes etc.

 

This kind of deal was available for most sailings but only last minute.

 

As other posters said it is an American flagged ship which means no casino,no ability to purchase alcohol packages of duty free shopping and extra tax on every drink.

 

It is a nice itinerary and they do have a singles host but this cruise does not attract many singles unfortunately.Krystal was a fantastic singles host but Gary was not so good.

Very simple...because they can. Supply and demand plus it's a US flagged ship with US wages and there is no competition. You pay the going rate or you don't go. Solo also don't spend as much on board vs a couple in one room. You can shop around and/or go during low season like Sep/Oct where prices might be lower. Also you might find minute deals.
