SharonCruise Posted September 12, 2005 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2005 Just returned yesterday from The 9-05-05 Celebration out of Jacksonville. Here's the story! Friday afternoon I placed my new digital camera on my stateroom desk/dressing table to charge the battery. Husband and I went out to dinner without the camera. Noticed while we were packing later that night that I didn't "see" my camera but didn't panic because I just figured my husband had packed it and didn't remember (he is THAT type). Therefore NOTHING was reported to the Pursers Desk. However, after arriving home and unpacking ALL my luggage, my camera is NOWHERE to be found. I am in no way insinuating (sorry spelling) that our cabin steward took my camera, (after all they would be 1st suspect) and we have never had a problem with anything being missing on a cruise BUT someone (not sure who) picked up my husbands tux while we were at dinner and they possibly could be suspect or perhaps the door to our cabin was left open by mistake for anyone to enter. My question is do we have any recourse at all or are we SOL? That camera was brand spanking new......only had for 2 months and still have all receipts. If we possibly do, whom do I contact? Just FYI, we didn't have cruise insurance because this was such an inexpensive cruise. I am already prepared to replace my camera myself but thought it couldn't hurt to ask for advice just in case! Thanks for all replies! Sharon
CruzinTamela Posted September 12, 2005 #2 Share Posted September 12, 2005 I'm so sorry to hear about your camera being stolen! I know how upset I'd be if this happened. I am such an avid picture taker that we usually take one of our laptops just so we can dump the photos from the memory card onto the computer. I'll definitely do this in the future because I didn't think what might happen if someone stole the camera with all of my pictures on it!
TidePrideGA Posted September 12, 2005 #3 Share Posted September 12, 2005 I definitely recommend d/l'ing every night. Last June I was at a formal banquet and left my camera on the table while I was dancing. When I left the ballroom I didn't think about it, and went back to my room to pack as the convention was over the next day. I didn't miss my camera until I unpacked - and realized where I had last seen it. I called both the hotel and the convention manager but no luck. The convention manager told me I was not the only one whose camera was stolen that night. The sad part (and the point of my sharing) is that this was two weeks after my son's high school graduation and I had not yet "bothered" to d/l the pix.... SherryMac Posted September 12, 2005 #4 Share Posted September 12, 2005 I'm so sorry to hear about your vanishing camera. I also lost a camera pretty much the same way on a dcl cruise a few years ago. Not meaning to forget about your original question, I have a lot of questions about your cruise. We are taking the same cruise in December and haven't seen much about this cruise on the Carnival boards. Did you arrive the day before and if so, where did you stay? How close to the port was it? How far from the airport to the port? What are some things-not-to-miss and what are some things worth skipping? How was the food and entertainment? Can you compare this ship to other cruises you have taken? I have alot more questions but will stop now so as not to overwelm you. Thanks for any input you can give me. SharonCruise Posted September 12, 2005 Author #5 Share Posted September 12, 2005 It helps that others sympathize with me.:) Sherry Mac to answer your questions......I am really trying to be objective here BUT had this cruise been our first cruise, I'm not sure that we would ever cruise again... Now it wasn't a bad cruise. Just not the same great experience's I've had on RCCL or Princess. It was inexpensive, closer to our home than Port Canaveral, and fine if you look at it in that context. Our Key West port was cancelled due to a broken rudder on the ship and we had to divert to Freeport for 12 hours of repairs. Then we overnighted in Nassau. The ship was rocking and rolling from beginning to end thanks to Tropical Depression/Tropical Storm/Hurricane Ophelia which we sailed thru. The weather wasn't bad the whole time, it was just really windy with high seas and lots of sick people. This did not detract from our experience at all and I have not based my opinions on this fact at all. Our cabin was E15 almost all the way forward/Starboard. Staterooms are spacious, no complaints, crew was friendly, food was not the best of our cruises but still good. We didn't do anything in Freeport as this was a last minute schedule change but did the Scenic Harbor and Atlantis tour in Nassau. This was lots of fun! Had dinner at Bimini Road at Atlantis. Very casual atmosphere, really good food but pricey. Of course we had Lobster and Shrimp and LOTS of drinks so for just a quick bite to eat might not be too bad. Didn't see many shows so can't really comment ont he entertainment onboard but didn't hear any complaints. We spent our evenings either in The Endless Summer Karaoke Bar or at the Casino making our nightly donations. LOL We did arrive in Jacksonville on Sunday before our departure on Monday. I had booked the Hilton Garden Inn Airport Park and Cruise Package for $99.00 and would recommend this for even the pickiest travelers. Had a King room on the 5th floor overlooking the pool and a small lagoon. The room was excellant and all staff was very friendly. The hotel is only about 2 years old and SOUNDPROOF so you hear no noise from the airport or planes taking off, etc. Its a great value because not only are the rooms worth the $99.00 but you also get a free shuttle to and from the cruise terminal and free parking for the length of your cruise. BOOK IT! LOL The terminal is only about 10 minutes from the hotel and airport. We have the Sovereign booked for December and I'm really looking forward to it and glad that it was also our first ever cruise. About the same amount of $$ but a much better experience for us. Any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks for all replies! Sharon If you purchased with a credit card you may have some coverage with the cerdit card company. I use an AMEX and it covers lose or theft to purchases made with the cc. You wouldn't lose anything but a phone call. Sorry about your camera.

cool joe Posted September 16, 2005 #8 Share Posted September 16, 2005 Did you charge it on a major credit card?? some have a clause I believe to help on such a matter, its worth a try
cruise pup Posted September 16, 2005 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2005 May be covered by a home owner's/renter's policy. If the camera was expensive enough and your deductable is low enough to make it worthhile and also whether it's worth having this on your record for a camera. This would be covered by travel insurance and I find it worth getting, not for low cost items for major unforseen circumstances, but the upside is if something like this happens you're covered as well. My friend left his camcorder in the cab on our way to a cruise and he was beside himself until I reminded him that he was covered by the travel insurance. He had no trouble receiving a refund check from the insurer (Travelex).
SharonCruise Posted September 16, 2005 Author #10 Share Posted September 16, 2005 I emailed Guest Relations at Carnival on Monday which was suggested that I do and as of today have heard no response. Have to say that I am dissapointed in the leval of Customer Service. At least someone at Carnival could email back to say that they could be of no assistance if that is the case. In any event, I replaced my camera yesterday. The model that I had has been discontinued but I got the one they recommend as a replacement. Thanks to all for your comments. I learned a lesson both about valuables taken on board and also about Carnival. Sharon

Have to say that I am dissapointed in the leval of Customer Service. You are absolutely correct in that you should receive some response from Carnival. HOWEVER, you have no case. There is no proof that your camera was stolen. Think about it. Anyone could email Carnival and claim whatever - missing camera, bracelet, cheese sandwich. There are all sorts of possibilities other than theft... and besides, wasn't there a safe in the cabin?
lizzielady Posted September 16, 2005 #12 Share Posted September 16, 2005 Sharoncruise--sorry about your camera. I was on this cruise, too. We probably saw each other in the casino! SherryMac--I wrote a review of the cruise that you may be interested in. I've compared it somewhat with HAL and Zenith cruises that I've been on. http://boards.cruisecritic.com./showthread.php?p=4673603#post4673603

You would think Carnival would try to do something to rid the line of all the would-be thieves. Unfortunately, we have only travelled in inside cabins where there isn't much space to hide stuff. What do you recommend?

What do you recommend? Don't think crime can be eliminated--the crime rate is very low on the ship, but still nonzero. There are lots of places to hide something valuable that won't go in the safe...the main thing is to make sure it takes some work to find it, so someone walking by a room being cleaned doesn't see it and dash in and grab it while the steward is cleaning the bathroom. toddv Posted September 17, 2005 #17 Share Posted September 17, 2005 How big is the safe? Ok--I'm trying to remember--on the Triumph and Pride the inside dimensions were something like 6 inches across, 4 inches high and 6 inches deep. It's a bit smaller than a typical hotel safe--made for wallets and watches, etc. A small pocket camera would fit--mine (SLR) definitely didn't. Maryandi Posted September 17, 2005 #18 Share Posted September 17, 2005 No one checks a rap sheet of passengers so keep yourself, your loved ones and personal belongings safe. I would like to think that the crew is checked prior to being hired but temptations can alter any person's principles. Good luck.

Was your husband still in it when it came up missing, or had he, well . . . become 'detached' from it?? ;)

I am not defending CCL, but how can you come to a conclusion that crime is so much of a problem on CCL because of Sharon's experience, and the statement Todd hides his camera when he's out of the cabin (which is prudent while traveling anywhere)?
