Gibraltar Car Hire (La Linea)?

Has anybody hired a car during a Gibraltar port stop from La Linea (just over the border) for a tour of the local area?

 

Europcar seem to be nearby and reasonably priced and we're thinking of getting a car and going to Marbella/Puerto Banus for the day.

 

We've been to Gibraltar on another cruise recently and so have already seen everything there we want to see but thought we could have a trip out into Spain.

There are much nicer places to visit than Marbella or Puerto Banus. Places like Castellar de la Frontera, Tarifa (where the word tarif comes from), Vejer de la Frontera or even Cadiz. The countryside is pretty nod is whee they raise the Bulls for bullfighting.

I think our preferred hirer, Crown Auriga (sp?), is now out of business, but Europcar is a perfectly respectable outfit.

There are always add-ons, but do insist on renting with fuel full and return full - normally no problem with a one-day hire.

I.m presuming their depot is on the Spanish side of the border, you do not want to cross the border by car but there are rarely delays for pedestrians. Remember you'll need your passports.

 

Gotta agree with the Londoner - Marbella is nowadays just another resort on the over-developed Med coast and not representative of "Spain".

Consider instead walled moorish Tarifa and perhaps further up the Atlantic coast though as far as Cadiz will surely be too much of a stretch. Or up into the mountains to the "white villages" and Ronda. Or the direct but boring freeway to Jerez de la Frontere. Google those places

All are tourist-orientated but much more Spanish.

Avoid Algeciras like the plague - a scruffy industrial port that stinks of oil.
