enjoyed our Pacific Northwest ports and what a great writeup and photos.

 

My coastal repo this last May also had a stop in Nanaimo - in fact we were only the second large cruise ship to visit there - and the entire chamber of commerce was out to greet us - the citizens have worked hard over the past few years to improve the downtown and port area as the town changes from strictly a logging town to more of a mixed economy with eco tourism as its main theme.

Hey Urban Trekker,

 

Nanaimo's early history was actually 100 years as a coal town starting with the Hudson Bay Company. It is BC's thrid oldest city. It was not unitl 1950 that lumber came to the forefront. Since 1980, it is mostly a service industry city with a University-college, regional hospital, school district and various levels of government offices as 40% of the employment. Tourism is a small, but growing part of the economy. Diving is our fastest growing segment as we have the clearest winter diving conditions, consistent temperatures and some artificial reefs that are great for intermediate and experienced divers. They are talking about adding one for new divers too.
