Pic heavy, detailed Vision OTS review/recount of our 12nighter out of Barcelona!

IT'S HERE... IT IS CRUISE DAY!!!!

TIP NUMBER 7:

Everyone gets a photo on the first day of the cruise. Not just the one as you walk in that says the cruise ship's name behind you- but on your Seapass card for security purposes too. Sooo, I always make sure I look good- even just for that very photo! It also means you don't have to do your hair again before dinner on the first night.

I didn't sleep at all! I was way too excited, like a child at Christmas!

We were ready by 9.30am, (truth be told, I was ready about 8am!) and we hailed a taxi to the port.

And there she was... Our home for the next 13 days, The Vision of the seas... And she was gorgeous too!

Unfortunately, I was too excited about seeing our balcony & making sure I didn't accidentally tell Mick, that I forgot to take any photos!!!

Our taxi only cost us €20 which we thought was very, very good.

I did worry that we wouldn't be able to find the ship. Cabs can drive all the way up to the cruise terminals. I think there are about six terminals all together and we weren't pre told where we would have to go. Thank goodness our taxi driver was onto it.

A porter collected our bags straightaway and whisked them away.

We walked inside the terminal where we went through the x-ray machine straightaway. Hang on, was I missing something?

Noone was there. Like seriously, there were staff everywhere but only about five people with luggage. It was only 10:10 in the morning, and we have only ever sailed out of Australia. We must've made a big mistake and they really weren't going to start boarding until 11:30 AM. Noooooo!

We got our paperwork all signed and our forms handed in. The lady asked for our passport. Eeeek- I had been told that this happens. It worried me, but we had to give it in... and then the lady said we could go to the waiting area. I needed a nervous wee so I went to the toilet and then looked at some of the shops.

A Royal Caribbean man called me over and asked if I wanted to have a photo taken. Mick and I decided that for this particular cruise, every time somebody asked us if we would like to have a photo we would smile and agree, even though we probably wouldn't buy any. It takes 10 seconds & it keeps the photographers in a good mood!

I called Mick over and we got our photo taken. Then we signed up for some specialty restaurants which we had never done before. We thought as it is a 12 night cruise we would still be able to have many nights in the main dining room. (Which we have always loved!)

We signed up for the three specialty restaurants Giovanni's, Izumi's, and Chop's Grill, but we left the reservation days open because we weren't sure which days we would book.

Side note, I had also booked and paid for the chefs table experience for Mick's birthday which was coming up on the cruise. This was a surprise and I wasn't going to tell him until the night of his birthday.

The photographer then came back over to us and said we could board the ship and that we were the first ones there!!! WHAAAAAAAAT?! Wow I couldn't contain my excitement. I even let out a little squeal. Then the specialty restaurant person came over to me again and handed me a free galley tour ticket which was for later on that day. Could this day get any better, seriously?! One minute later we were on board the ship. From drop-off from the taxi to being on board was a total of nine minutes! (Including my nervous wee!)

TIP NUMBER 8:

If you're lucky enough to get on early and no one is around, run around the ship, taking photos of yourselves looking like you're the only people onboard! Then you won't have people you don't know in your photos and you look really important! Ha ha!

We spent about one hour going from deck two right up to the top to see what fun things we could find. More selfies were taken.

The ship was absolutely beautiful and everything looked great.

These great interactive tvs were all over ship. They not only told you where you were, but what food was available for dinner and what was on at that time!

We decided to get to a drink and went to the bar. To my shock horror all the recent things said about drink prices were true! The standard, (not including the drink of the day) was about $15. Yikes!!!

I knew I was only probably going to have one or two drinks a day, so I couldn't justify the drinks package. But Mick is a big drinker so we decided that he would get the drinks package. On all of our Australian cruises we didn't spend more than about seven dollars a drink, so we were totally shocked when we saw these prices even though we knew it would be because of the VAT tax. At least that made our minds up very quickly on whether to get the drinks package or not. That's okay, as Matthew Wilder sings, Ain't nothing gonna break my stride!

I wrote a note for the notice board, just in case people hadn't read the post about our informal meet & greet.

They had photos of everyone in charge up on the walls, which I thought was great!

We were very excited to know that we had captain Lis, the only female captain in the fleet. More on this later.

We snuck in to the Main Dining Room to see where we were sitting. We had asked for a table of eight, but we were seated at a table of six. Fingers crossed they are four awesome people seated with us!!!

We got another drink at the pool. The sun was amazing and the ship was still soooooooo quiet. It was glorious.

At 11:30am, we went into the Windjammer to have something to eat. I had been too nervous to eat breakfast this morning so by now I was starving. I know a lot of people don't like the food in the Windjammer but this is my review so I'm going to say that I really thoroughly enjoyed it. Mick prefers the food in the solarium so we would often go there after I had found my food from the Windjammer.

Then we walked to the Solarium. It was gorgeous and had an Egyptian theme.

All of a sudden the solarium became my favourite place on earth. Not because it had an amazing Egyptian theme, but because they had Keylime pie and I hadn't eaten it for 14 months. I even took a selfie with it & thanked the man working there... About six times!

The 1 PM announcement came that the cabins were open. 7652... We are on our way!!!

Mick & I have this silly thing of opening up hotel doors together, the very first time we enter. Opening up doors on cruise ships is no exception. With huge smiles on our faces, we slowly opened up our door. It looked amazing, it was fantastic, just what I thought.

I suggested to Mick that we should go and look at the balcony. To his absolute delight, as well as mine, he saw the wraparound balcony and his eyes lit up. I'll post some cabin pics later :-)

The room itself was really big. It was a D one category stateroom. We had a huge king sized bed, a three seater couch with room to move and a coffee table. We also both had a bed side table each. There was also a desk with mirrors, which I used to get ready in front of every night, as the light was a lot kinder to me than the light in the bathroom.

TIP NUMBER 9:

We always bring some sort of air freshener with us. Usually an air neutraliser like One Drop for the toilet/bathroom. Especially if there's more than just you staying in your cabin. No one wants to walk in and get a face full of any unkind smell & your room attendant probably doesn't want to either.

The view from our balcony

TIP NUMBER 10:

If I have a balcony room, I always bring washing powder. This way, I can wash smalls in the sink & put them out on the balcony to dry. I wash my bathers everyday & it helps if you're on short or long cruises... I don't really want to hand over my undies, (I know the staff are very professional, but I'm happy to wash my own!)

I also bought a pegless washing line. I got it from a camping store for about $12. Please let me tell you how fabulous this was! It had suction cups at each end to stick to the glass on the balcony. So. Damn. Good.

We had HEAPS of storage and closet space. No one could ever say there isn't enough room. & if they did, I would say they have way too many clothes! Ha ha.

The bathrooms had been refurbished. They looked fantastic! Call me a little crazy but the bathrooms are a lot bigger than any other cruise ship I had been on. Was it because we hadn't had a decent shower in four weeks? Possibly! But I certainly was happy about the bathroom that we got!

It was time to meet for our galley tour. Woohoo.

The galley tour went in two groups. About 10 people pushed in front of us so we had to wait with the second group for about 10 minutes. I had read on cruise critic about all the people who push in, in the lines. Honestly, we didn't really see this happen very often.

Our galley tour was fabulous.

We were shown the Chop's Grill kitchen & restaurant. They were gorgeous.

We met the chefs table sommelier whose name was Maxi. Maxi & I knew we would be great friends when we took the first selfie together.

ImageUploadedByForums1435384535.812901.jpg.ddf2bfcd3186bb8f4de61029086feac1.jpg

ImageUploadedByForums1435384548.411042.jpg.b4dbacec1ffd6ac087fcace42cbf5554.jpg

Maxi had a larger-than-life personality and smile to match it.

After trying some samples of what they cook in the specialty restaurants, Maxi started to tell us that he worked at the Chef's Table specialty restaurant. Mick then said that he has always wanted to do the chefs table experience. Eeeek. (Yes I know, that is why I secretly booked it in for your birthday!!!)

I had to stop Maxi from telling us all of the information and then I blurted out that we were already going to his restaurant. Mick was so excited to hear this!

(At least I still had one more birthday present up my sleeve!)

We went back to our room, where we met our room attendant, Natalia.

Natalia was hilarious and liked a chat as much as I did.

She explained our luggage hadn't been delivered yet, but she would put it in our room for us when it came.

We decided to head to the solarium to grab anther drink. BOOM! We bumped into Mike and LaMac! Awesome! After a few more drinks, it was time to go to the Schooner bar for our informal meet and greet.

I was very nervous that no one would show up... Eeeeeekkkkkkk.

Hello! Welcome to my review/recount of our 12 night cruise out of Barcelona on Vision of the Seas. As I'm writing this after our cruise, I made sure I took many, many pics and also wrote detailed notes just in case my memory failed me in any way.

Please be aware... Take this as my disclosure statement... You might get to know me very well, even too well, lol... I'm a cards on the table type person & I say it how I see it... So if you think that this may not be the review for you... then maybe move to the next one. Saying that, I'm a glass half full person and I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I'm enjoying reliving it.

This is my second, full scale review, but I write Trip Advisor reviews weekly, so hopefully that helps with me writing this one. We also just finished a 7 night cruise on Splendour of the Seas just after this one, which I'll be reviewing as well.

Please feel free to ask me any questions along the way, & I'll try my hardest to answer them. I've got all of the daily compasses to show as well. (I know how people love their compasses!!!)

Now, I took some really great pics, (I'm no photographer, but i go okay!) & I'd love to post them on here... I'll try and add some and see how I go... otherwise, I might need to upload them on a different app or something, but fingers crossed they look okay just going straight on!

Here is a pic of Mick & I to get the ball rolling!

Ok lets go:)

Ok, where was I? That's right, on the way to the Schooner Bar, worried that there would only be four of us...

I didn't need to be worried.

Within five minutes- the whole bar was full. I'm talking over 60 people!!! It was such an amazing feeling to know that everyone else wanted to meet up as much as we did! & it was absolutely fantastic to see so many new faces, and knowing that we had all been chatting for the last 12 months was brilliant! Finally putting faces to names... Although, I'm terrible with names & it proved to be a lot harder than I thought!

We sat chatting and mingling for about an hour. I felt famous, as I had uploaded a pic of myself so everyone knew who to look out for, oh and they knew! Ha ha. It was great.

Unfortunately, the call for our muster drill came just as we saw Joey & Uli! We got to have a three minute chat, which was sooooo great, but we had to head outside, in different directions.

A lot of people didn't come so we were out there for about 30 minutes. Boo! It was super hot and I wasn't wearing the right clothes to work on my tan. A Spanish man was singing next to us, so he kept us quite entertained. As usual, the crew were really nice & friendly.

It was then time for our sail away. I'd never been to a sail away before. I'd always been unpacking in the room and missed it.

The party was great. We met the cruise director, Mercedes, who was full of life! To this day, I still have no idea who the Activities Manager was. I saw her a couple of times, but she was never in charge of anything. Mercedes was the one to host everything, including the belly flop competition and all the pool parties and dancing.

At about 6pm, we went back to our room and still no luggage. That's okay sometimes it doesn't come until 8 PM and I was wearing a nice dress that I could go to dinner in anyway.

For dinner we sat at a table for six. We had a late seating at 8.30pm. We met Annette & her mum Julie who lived in Canada & a couple from England who were both really drunk, every single night that we had dinner with them. That became the ongoing joke!

Annette and Julie were awesome and I'm sure they will appear a few more times in my review!

Our dinner every night was at 8.30pm, as we had a lot of port intensive days & a few later all aboard times.

Our servers... Well Ritchie, our main server was great. He wrote down all of our names and knew them by the end of the meal. Our assistant server, hmmmm, she didn't even speak to us on the first night. (Later on in the cruise I spoke to Ritchie about this, saying she doesn't even say hi, so she won't be getting an extra tip, & he spoke with her, but she didn't really change her ways).

We all enjoyed our dinner. This was my meal. It was pork. So yum!

ImageUploadedByForums1435476385.735041.jpg.fb1ae2fa4a2b3f62f5c83b59a4d79bc6.jpg

When we got back to our cabin at 11 PM after a fantastic dinner, our bags were finally there! Usually I would spend the afternoon unpacking, but I wasn't going to even look at them until tomorrow.

What an amazing first day!!!

Next up, Cannes, France!

Weather, 79 F/ 26C

Ship's arrival: 9am (tender)

Last tender: 5.15pm

Formal night! Yes, day two & a formal night already!

Today I had organised a private tour for 8 of us, (LaMac, Mike, Sue, Jan, Uli, Joey & Mick & I.) I had booked through Provence Riviera Tours.

I had emailed everyone in our group to meet in the Schooner Bar at 9.30am. All of my organised tours were meeting there... (Most of the same people were on our tour & it's less crowded, which is great.)

The idea was always to meet about 30 minutes early & all walk off together, or get a tender boat together, depending on the port. (So our tour would officially start at 10am).

So at 9.40, we were still waiting for Joey & Uli. I tried to call down to their room & they hadn't answered. Hmmmm... This is where I go from sweet Hailz to, "Why doesn't everyone go by the time!?" But it was okay, they finally turned up and we had tender tickets for boat number four.

Our tour was 10am- 4pm & was a total cost of €380 plus tip. Mick had gone to get our tender tickets early.

TIP NUMBER 10:

If they say you can get a tender ticket from 9am, you should be able to get them from about 8.15am. So when Mick got there at 8.30, they were already upto tender number 4!

LaMac is an A type personality like me, so anything I was thinking, she was too. (Always! W are two peas in a pod... A well organised pod!) Both Mick & Mike are relaxed guys, so they calm us down a bit! Ha ha.

On the tender over, we saw so many amazing yachts!

Looking back at our gorgeous ship

We took some snaps and met our driver, Justin, just outside of the port. He was holding up a sign with my name on it. (I felt a bit famous!!!)

We jumped into his minivan... Which was very snug.

We were super lucky to be in Cannes for the annual Cannes Film Festival!

Oh, by the way, Justin was English. Yes, I thought it was ironic too. But he'd been living there for 15 years and absolutely loved it.

He pointed out some houses of the rich & famous, including Elton John & Sofia Loren.

Justin drove us to Eze... A small town on top of a mountain, with amazing views & is a walking only town. It was a stunning little town, very pokey and hard to walk on, as there were like cobble stones as the footpath, plus it was uphill. There were little shops all the way along, including restaurants.

Now, I did need to use a bathroom, so LaMac, myself and the boys headed near the church where there was a public restroom that you needed to pay .50 to use.

I went in first &, holy heck, the floor was wet, (I could only imagine!) & I'm not a girlie girl, but my eyes were closed the whole time. Next was Mick & then Mike. While Mike was in there, the actual toilet moved and reversed INTO THE WALL & the room started cleaning itself. When he came out and told us all about, I couldn't stop laughing!!! Sorry Mike!

We had to meet Justin and what do ya know?! Yes, Uli & Joey were 10 minutes late. Thank god I liked her! Ha ha.

Justin then took us to the country of Monaco.

Driving there... So pretty

I thought getting into Monaco would be through some sort of security, but nope, we drove thru a tunnel. Ha ha.

We were once again, super lucky, as they were setting up the for Motor Grand Prix the following weekend... & Justin drove us on the track! It was super cool.

Justin also told us that to be a citizen, you had to own/buy a property there. Even if you were born there, doesn't mean that you get automatic citizenship.

Oh, & just in case you were thinking of buying a property there, a standard two bedroom apartment will set you back a tiny €30million. Sign me up! Ha ha.

While in Monaco, we saw the yellow submarine that inspired The Beatles.

We got back to the port at 3.45pm. Uli & Joey decided to go for a walk around the town, but the rest of us got a tender back to the ship.

The four of us, (us two & LaMac & Mike) went to the bar & had a few drinks.

Then it was time to get ready!!! Mick & I had a date in Giovanni's! (& Mick still needed formal shoes from dancing too hard the weekend before we left, remember?! So the MDR was out while doing formal nights until we got him some shoes!)

Our meal was absolutely perfect & soooooo delicious but I forgot to bring my camera... Never fear, we went back again and I got pics!!!

After dinner we went to listen to a band in the Centrum... On they were terrible!!! They were the same band that played poolside every day... & I could have paid them to stop! It was honestly that terrible! Every. Friggen. Day.

We bumped into Annette & Julie, (our MDR table mates), who said they wanted to come to our next specialty restaurant with us... Yay!!! We had made some new friends!

We were in bed by 11pm, getting ready for Italia in the morning!!!

Our first towel animal!!!

I woke up early to our bed shaking! Immediately, I thought we were back at home and there was an earthquake. (We've had so many in the last 12 months in the small town that we live in!)

I shook Mick & went to get our dogs when I realised we were on the ship. Mick was awake too and told me it was the vibrations from the ship and that we must have been docking. GEEZ. I sure hope that doesn't happen every morning.

We always have AFT balconies and that has never happened!

We had to meet our tour group at 7.30 for an 8am walk off and meet our driver.

I was so excited to see what Tuscany had to offer!!!

So we went to the Windjammer and had a quick breakfast and went to the Schooner bar to meet the gang.

Everyone was on time & on today's tour, we had Sue, Jan, LaMac, Mike, Dolores and Pierre. We were to meet our driver at the pier right next to the ship, easy!

The tour was booked for 8am to 5pm and the total was €650 for the 8 of us. The company, (RomeCabs) in every email had told me €600... so when the last email had said they had to charge an extra €50, I did question it, but they said it was because of the extra travel costs at being at La Spezia. (Maybe just something to ask them if you're booking!) .

I had pre booked our tours with RomeCabs. We had them in LaSpezia, (said like, "La Spet Sia") Civitavecchai and Salerno.

We walked off the ship all together, where we met Vito. He was such a cutie, (not a hottie, more like a little brother kinda cute) & he was excited to see us.

We had a minivan which was nice. Not huge, but we all had enough room to move.

Our first stop was Pisa... & of course, the Leaning Tower.

A sight on the way

ImageUploadedByForums1435486858.310474.jpg.a64c64d35d80c604bab82b0e0eaf667c.jpg

Now I know that the drivers aren't tour guides, but I thought he would have told us some cool facts like Justin had told us the day before. We asked him lots of questions, but he wasn't sure on all of the answers. (I had to do a questionnaire after the cruise and I let the owner of the company know. He then let me know that his driver had hurt his back two days before and Vito was all that he could find. I was happy with that answer!)

It was about 45 minutes and we were at the Leaning Tower. I don't know what I expected. Maybe huge queues and security? Maybe because it was super early in huge morning, but there was hardly anyone there. (No complaints here!)

Our first glimpses!

Pisa continued...

We took a lot of pics at the leaning tower, yes, THOSE kind of pics of us holding them up, but everyone was doing that, so it was okay, right?!

We were there for a total for 45 minutes and we got some cool souvinears for back home. Every chance I got, I went to the bathroom. You never know when you're gonna need one.

The bathroom at Maccas wasn't clean at all and there was no toilet paper. Eeeeek.

After a quick freak out, we were back in the van and on our way to Florence. Get ready, it's amazing!!!

We drove to Florence and it was GORGEOUS. Even that wasn't a good enough descriptive word for it. The streets were tiny and uneven, but it was busy and full of life!

Vito parked the car and asked us what we wanted to do. The boys said EAT. The girls said SHOP. He showed us where to do great shopping for leather shoes and bags. I'm quite sure drivers get a "finders fee". The store was nice, but not for us. (Super mega expensive!)

Vito also showed us where to eat. It was a bit too fancy for some of our fellow travellers, but Mike & LaMac wanted to join us there... And boy I'm glad they did!!! It was called the Golden View Ristorante... The views were worth a million bucks!!!

After our amazing lunch, we decided to walk around a bit. Unfortunately, it was a Monday and the Academia Museum was closed. That was okay, the replica of the Statue of David was out the front and that was good enough for me.

We then went and found some new shoes for Mick. Poor guy danced too hard at the wedding we went to the weekend before we left and broke his good leather shoes... Luckily we found the BEST leather shoes ever. They were so nice, and on sale for 1/2 price. (€150!!!) they were handmade in that store and the owner was super nice and picked our accents straight away.

He then let me use his bathroom. For this, I will be forever grateful! I couldn't have done another public toilet that day!!!

Bed time!!! Sorry guys, but it's been a huge weekend for us & I can hardly keep my eyes open. I'll finish La Spezia tomorrow & start the next day... (& one of my all time fave days ever!)

Ps. Please let me know if you want me to include certain things or leave other things out. I do think I have a lot of selfies. Lol.

Also feel free to ask any questions.

Hailz.

Love your review! We are going on the Vision in August and I feel even more excited by reading your review and looking at the beautiful pics!

One question from my side: how was the internet on the ship? Was it worth buying a package and how expensive were they?

Enjoying your review! Really love the details!

We are doing all the same specialty restaurants as you, including chefs table. Looking forward to hearing about that menu!

Also, can you tell us which nights are formal?

Can one person get the tender tickets for whole group on private tour?

Thanks so much for all the time you are taking!
