Agree completely, NJ Fred.

Thanks to everyone for reflections on John Maxtone-Graham. Never had the pleasure of seeing him discourse, but was a huge fan of his written work. Tried to capture it here, for Cruise Critic, along with some of your contributions.

His books gave me many hours of reading pleasure. A truly great author.

May he rest in peace. His works will live forever.

John was 85 when he died ... he was born on 2 August 1929.

I was so sad to hear of his death. I have very happy memories of hosting a cocktail party for him and Mary, and other friends on the 1995 QE2 World Cruise.

As soon as I saw the thread's title I knew it would not be good news.

I had the pleasure of meeting John and his lovely wife, Mary, numerous times, both at sea and on shore and, obviously, owned most of his books. "The only way to cross" really got me hooked on both cruising and ship history.

He was a legend!

I know Bill Miller also. Like John, a classy gentleman.

John will be sorely missed, but others will carry on the flag.

Deepest condolences to his wife and family. Did you know his son, Ian, was a producer for the "Simpsons" cartoon show? I met him once on QE2.

This brings back a lot of memories.

Always calm seas, John! :)

After reading this thread I realized I may have missed out on meeting this man. But I have ordered and received the book "The Only Way to Cross" and as a bonus it was a signed copy. I plan on reading it nightly before bed to see what I have missed. I am very excited to read this book. :)
