Question About SFO Airport and LAX Airport

At SFO: When changing terminals... From terminal 2, American Airlines, to terminal 1-A, Alaska Airlines, must passengers leave the secured area to ride the train? Walking to another terminal is done inside security....right? However riding the train, you must leave the secured area...right?

At LAX: What is the best way to change terminals, from American Airlines, in terminal 4, to Alaska Airlines in terminal 6? Do passengers have to leave the secure area and go out side to walk, or ride the shuttle bus?

Thank you.

LAX is a compact horseshoe. It's a two minute walk between the individual terminals. Departures are upstairs, arrivals are downstairs. Walk with the flow of traffic to get from T4 to T6.

Unfortunately, you do have to leave the secure area. If you decide that you need the shuttle, they're located at the sidewalk separating the pickup area and road.

No you don't. There's an airside (inside security) shuttle bus that runs between T4 and T6 (American and Alaska) which may or may not stop at the "Eagle's Nest," where American Eagle flies.

There are also now tunnels open between T4-T5-T6 that reportedly take about as much time to transit as the shuttle bus, but it being LAX, they're probably very depressing. :(

But either beats having to go through security at the other end, hands down.

Thanks for the info. It must be relatively new.

The American-Alaska shuttle bus has been running for years, going back to when Alaska was in T3. I don't know how many times I've taken it.

The tunnels have been there too, but have been closed for years, at least going back to 9/11 if not before.

I haven't used the tunnels in many, many years & recently read a post that also said they're no longer an option.

No, you no longer have to leave security to get from T4 to T5 or T6. The underground tunnel between the terminals was reopened for public use earlier this year, in addition there is an airside shuttle that runs between T4 and T6 for ticket holders. The tunnel is about a 10 minute walk. I used it myself in March to connect from American to Alaska.

Thanks for the update at LAX and searching online found a couple of sites from this year showing the route of the underground tunnel with photos.

Please tell me where to find the tunnel between the terminals. Is it on the way and in the direction of baggage claim?

And, where can passengers find the airside shuttle?

I don't recall ever seeing the tunnel or the shuttle.

Thank you.

You go ALL the way downstairs in the old central "rotunda" of Terminal 4 out toward the end of the concourse, this is a level below the gates. Take the escalators down There are signs for the airside shuttle. The inter-terminal tunnel is in the back and there is a sign that says to Delta and Alaska or words to that effect.

If you used LAX back in the day, the inter-terminal tunnel it is the level of the big tunnel that connects the T4 "satellite" with the T4 ticket counter. Before they built the concourses all the way between the ticketing area and the "satellites" that tunnel was the only way to get between ticketing/baggage claim and the gates. For those of us that remember LAX back in those days the inter-terminal tunnel, it is pretty easy to find, just pretend you have to use the tunnel to baggage claim again, but take the little tunnel, not the big one.
