Shore vs Catamaran Snorkeling

We will be stopping in Cozumel in March, our other port is Progresso. We really like to snorkel, but the private jeep tours look fun. From the website it looks like the jeep tour will take you snorkeling, from the shore. Will we be able to see the amazing underwater scenes that the catamaran tours provide? Or should we do the catamaran instead?

My experiences are that you usually find better snorkeling from a boat. You can have good snorkeling from shore but the amazing reefs were from boats.
