Cash deposit

I was considering using cash for the deposit on my upcoming cruise on the Gem. It will be myself and my 12 year old son. I understand that it is a $450 deposit for myself but how much would I need to put down for my son? I plan on restricting the amount that he can charge on his card to $100. I have seen how quickly the arcade charges accumulate on sea days

I have prepaid gratuities, shore excursions, the ubp and udp plus I have $200 obc so I doubt I will spend much more. I prefer cash in the casino. Thanks for any replies.

The $450 is a suggested amount. When we cruised on the Gem our friend put down a $152 deposit. If everything is prepaid there isn't a need for a large deposit unless you intend to spend it.

Thanks. I read on NCL.com that it was $450 pp but it may have said suggested. I don't anticipate spending much more onboard except for the casino and tips.

I don't believe that is does say "suggested" but they won't hold you to it when you check in and that's the main thing.

okay i have a question also about the cash deposit...I am sailing the Gem on November 23, 2015...at first i was going to give a cash deposit...it does say on NCL Site that for a 10 night cruise is a $450 deposit....my question is if i deceided to use my credit card as a deposit, instead of doing a cash deposit, will ncl automically take out a $450 depoist hold on my credit card? I was figuring in using my credit card, and paying the amount at the end of the cruise... this way i will have a little more cash on me...for spending on the islands... I, also, have my gratitities paid for, my ubp (as the promo all paid for) and the udp all paid for...plus i have $200 OBC to spend...and i dont foresee myself going above and beyond.... would like your opinion on this...as my main concern is that if i use the credit card...and i settle my bill at guest services the night before the cruise ends....and i dont use the entire $450.....the balance of the unused portion...will that still be on a hold with my credit card...until ncl releases the hold...or when i pay my bill last night of cruise....will the rest of the hold just die off... and if i deceided to do a cash deposit, and being everything else is paid for.... do you think then a sufficent amount of a cash deposit of $300 would be a sufficent amount... also i did take the gem on a 2 night sailing and i did a cash deposit with them...and i do remember them asking me...how much of a deposit did i want to open the account up with....there was no set amount.... please would appreciate if someone can get back to me on this, as i am stilll kind of confused wehter to open up the account with a credit card of do cash..

A lot of variables. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with using a credit card to secure the account then paying the account in cash at the end. As for the amount of the hold they put a $300 hold on my card for a 7 night cruise so a $450 hold seems reasonable for a 10 night. It is my understanding that the hold will be released as soon as you pay the account with cash or shortly thereafter but that's just from what I've read.
