Cash Deposit on Breakaway

We leave on Sunday on the Breakaway. This is my 12th cruise and we have used cash the last few times due to them screwing up our credit cards/bank accounts in the past. This is our first time with NCL. I have read the website and have seen different things on the boards, however, does anyone know what the policy is? Is it really $300 pp per room? It just seems like so much especially because we have the UBP and already paid gratuities and we prepaid gratuities too..we have never had a bill over $660 for both of us and that included alcohol, pictures and gifts. I have also heard that you cannot use your account for cash in the casino? Does anyone have any first hand experience with them? Thanxs in advance! :)

As far as I know, the $300 is just a guideline, and not a requirement. You can put as much (or as little) as you'd like, but if you run out of "credit" you won't be able to charge anything to your room until you deposit more.

Awesome! Thank you! I forgot that we also have a $150 OBC!

I wonder if a pax is using cash if they would be required to put down at least enough to cover the dsc if they had not already prepaid it

So is it possible...since the suggested amount to put down is just a suggestion and not a requirement.....that 2 pax in 1 cabin could actually board the ship for a 7 day cruise and only put down say $100?

Let's not bring obc or if the dsc is fair or not into the picture.....I just wonder if 2 pax could board with on say a $100 cash deposit....which would be eaten up by the dsc rather quickly on a7 day

Alternately....let's say $100 in cash down plus Ncl obc(which isn't supposed to be used for dsc right?). How exactly would ncl be able to get enough out of you to cover the full dsc

So with free or pre paid ubp...free or prepaid udp....with the 18% already paid....and no other charges....a pax could technically use an ncl obc to cover the dsc yes or no? If they only put down a small or zero cash deposit.

Thanks

Before anyone gets upset....I prepay dsc and give the steward extra

Just askin' btw nothing more nothing less

I am aware that you cannot use the OBC for gratuities...I will let everyone know when I get back! :)

Our daughter and son stayed in a Balcony and they each had to put down

a deposit. My daughter wanted to put down $200 cash and she was told she had to put down at least $300.00.Our son used a credit card. Everything else had been prepaid. She didn't spend any money at all ( very frugal) plus Mom and dad was on board lol and she received all of her money back when she went to settled the account which she did the night before coming back. This was on the Gem, but I'm thinking it would be the same on any NCL ship.

Would they be able to deny boarding to someone who only wanted to put down $100?

In all the years I e been cruising I never recall in any document I've received that $300 was required

I actually don't ever recall seeing it anywhere other than on cc

Of course I use a credit card at check in and am smart enough to know why they ask for one....but the real question is would they deny boarding if I didnt have one nor had enough cash?

I do realize that they ask for a card for online check in so that might be where a pax is notified of the $300 but if at online check in I checked off I was using cash.....would they say at that time the $300 was required?

I can't see a family of 4 putting down $1200 [emoji79]

No, because you only deposit cash to your onboard account after boarding, not while doing the check-in in the terminal.

It's (and has been for years) listed on NCL's website, the amounts have changed though.

I can only tell you what they told our adult daughter, she

wanted to put down $200 and was told they neede $300

we always use Credit Cards for us, so I never

really paid attention to it. All I know is

that is what happened to her, I never read it

anywhere either, but I guess that does not

mean it doesn't happen

I don't think so, since she already was on board

they told her they wanted $300 so she put

down $300 why that was I don't know

since we did not go to Customer Service

with her.

People don't seem to think, the cruise lines, has a fixed amount hold on all credit cards and ATM's cards. There is FAR more than just tips, that deposits are covering. Damages, medical treatment etc.

You aren't getting the question fully....

I'm asking if the ship would deny boarding to a pax who does not have a credit or debit card and doesn't want to put down $300 cash per person

I don't think so, since you have to be on

board already in order to put down cash.

I'm only saying what happened to my

daughter, she didn't argue with them just

did what did told her to do

I'm interested to know what they would have done had she not had $300 but say only $100?

Would they have made her get off the ship?

My point in asking is just to confirm that they can ask for $300....they can even say it's required ...they can say they will take credit or debit cards...but the reality is if a pax doesn't have or doesn't want to put anything down....they really can't be forced to can to they?

If I say I don't have it...would they Insist I leave the ship lol or ask to look thru my wallet perhaps? Lol

Reality is more like any pax can walk on the ship and put nothing down IMHO if they choose

That's not how I travel of course but just saying that It could be done ....especially for those types that insist on removing dsc and leaving cash

Well I can't answer that, since she paid it

I can speculate on it, since she did not push

the issue .

I agree it a suggested amount and I bet Ncl counts on pax to just go with the $300

My dd age 15 was supposed to go on a cruise with the marching band....all 70 of them!!!

The price was high for a rust bucket ship and it price supposedly covered dsc etc...can't imagine each kid putting $300 down...nope no way...and the band admin wasn't doing it either.

I'm sure many pax board the ships putting zero down and Ncl just gets lucky when pax actually have $300 in cash to put down.

We were on the Pearl last year and a woman about 3 people in front of us was trying to disembark, and at first, the agent at the gate quietly told her she needed to go to the cashier as there was an outstanding balance on her bill. She refused, and when he became quietly insistent, she became loud and rather obnoxious. All of a sudden, security showed up and blocked the exit, and told her she was not disembarking and that they would escort her to the cashier. She then actually started to pummel her fists on the security guys chest, and surprise surprise, they actually restrained her and called the police. Security asked a few of us if we would be willing to provide a statement of what we had witnessed. We did....

With regard to what happens if you aren't violent, about 7 years ago, when we used to only bring one credit card with us when we traveled, we were getting ready to disembark and heard our names being called over the audio system, asking us to go to guest services. When we got there, we learned our credit card had been declined. We couldn't figure out why, since we knew we had credit available and the card had no balance. After sitting on hold w/ credit card company for a very long time, NCL folks got impatient and next thing I knew, they were printing out a "Promissory Note" all filled in, requiring us to pay the outstanding balance w/I 14 days, with a confession of judgment clause and imposing a heft service fee. We both had to sign it, which we did because we were mortified. Turned out that because NCL had put so many holds on the card, and because we had used it in multiple foreign locations, the bank had flagged it for fraud and shut it down. But we were soooo embarrassed. When we called NCL and explained what happened, with our CC company on the line, they very graciously removed the service fee. But now we always carry multiple credit cards....

Never had our card declined BUT they had put so many holds on our card it was tied up for days!! That's why we have paid cash ever since. We have the cash, well over what is being requested, but I was just curious if anyone had experience lately on using cash and the actual amount of what they paid. I guess now my other question is that I see someone said their daughter got her money back the night before. The last few times we had money left (w/Carnival) they gave us a check.

They may or may not give you cash back on the last night. Others have reported a check being sent after the cruise.NCL typically wants at least the amount of total DSC that will be accumulated by all guests on the reservation. Beyond that, it is up to you, but you will be declined service if the money runs out. Much easier to use a credit card.

I actually started to post to answer your question, but then I diverted into a long story that didn't answer the question at all. Let me try again.

When we paid for our young adult child and friend to come on our Breakaway cruise with us last year, and also had pre-paid for the DSC for both of them, but absolutely did not want them tied to our credit card -- not the most responsible child -- we asked what the absolute minimum was we had to put down in cash, and they allowed us to give them 100. per person, so we put down 200. total. They told us they would have required more if the DSC had not been pre-paid. (And of course, on about Day 3, our kid with a good job and money of his own said "Dad, we got a note that we needed to deposit more money or we couldn't charge anything else at the bar..." We told him to pony up his own money. LOL

I have paid using cash before. You do not have to put money on your account right away. We went to the front desk after the ship left port. So, you can put down any amount. If you use the money you put in the account your card will be frozen until you put more money in the account.

We settled our account before we went to bed on the last night. They gave us cash back.

My husband and I have been on the Breakaway 3 times. We use cash every time. We usually start off putting $500 down, for both of us. We have been told we can put as much or little as we want. When we get low we go and put more down. We also missed how low we were once and were blocked for using the room charge. We then went added more. So watch that. You cannot use any cash on the room in the casino.

Thank you so much! My plan was to put 400 down and then replenish as needed. But with grat already paid for (UBP and DSC) I really don't seeing us using much at all...especially if we can't use it in the casino..

I always leave dsc in tact and recently have started to prepay it but as many here feel they would like to reduce it and give cash out then they should just get the prepaid or free ubp and udp or sdp and put down zero or a nominal amount in cash at guest services

It would eliminate the hassle of filling out forms for a dsc refund

Ncl can't charge dsc to your account if nothing there and dsc is optional right

Lol
